Russia given five more months to fix ‘deficient’ anti-doping plan

MONACO—Russia has been given five more months to fix a “seriously deficient” plan to combat doping in track and field, World Athletics said Saturday. Track’s world governing body said Russia’s deadline was moved from Sept. 30 to March 1. A World Athletics task force reported the Russian track federation, known as RusAF, had so few experienced staff that it couldn’t compose an adequate road map for lifting a doping suspension which has been in place nearly five years. “Although the draft plan was better than what has come before (in particular, in acknowledging the doping culture in Russian athletics, and in identifying some of the systemic issues that have to be addressed to change that culture), it is nevertheless seriously deficient and does not meet most of the requirements,” the task force said in a statement. “The task force could not possibly provide feedback that would facilitate turning this product into an acceptable plan by the end of September unless we took on the job … [Read more...] about Russia given five more months to fix ‘deficient’ anti-doping plan

‘Retaliation’ for Russia’s SolarWinds Spying Isn’t the Answer

Since even before he took office, President Joe Biden has promised a response to the massive campaign of Russian hacking that came to light just after he was elected. The rhetoric has only grown more heated since, with reports that some sort of reprisal may come in the next three weeks. That's just long enough, cyber policy experts hope, for the Biden administration to rethink its approach and avoid a punitive action against Moscow that, while perhaps politically expedient, would accomplish little and could even detract from efforts to curb a far more dangerous category of Russian hacking. On Sunday evening, The New York Times published a report stating that the White House plans to retaliate against Vladimir Putin's regime for the hacking campaign known as the SolarWinds hack, in which likely Russian hackers compromised IT management software to access as many as 18,000 networks globally. The list of confirmed victims includes nine US federal agencies, including the … [Read more...] about ‘Retaliation’ for Russia’s SolarWinds Spying Isn’t the Answer

Tech firms say there’s little doubt Russia behind major hack

WASHINGTON: Leading technology companies said on Feb 23 that a months-long breach of US corporate and government networks was so sophisticated, focused and labour-intensive that a nation had to be behind it, with all the evidence pointing to Russia. In the first congressional hearing on the breach, representatives of technology companies involved in the response described a hack of almost breathtaking precision, ambition and scope. The perpetrators stealthily scooped up specific emails and documents on a target list from the US and other countries. “We haven’t seen this kind of sophistication matched with this kind of scale,” Microsoft president Brad Smith told the Senate Intelligence Committee. Smith said investigators estimate at least 1,000 highly skilled engineers would have been required to develop the code that hijacked widely used network software from Texas-based SolarWinds to deploy malware around the world through a security update. “We’ve seen substantial evidence … [Read more...] about Tech firms say there’s little doubt Russia behind major hack

PH, Russia in talks to convert visas of Filipino tourists to working visas — DOLE

MANILA, Philippines — Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III on Saturday said the Philippines and Russia are in talks for a bilateral agreement to convert to working visas the tourist visas given to Filipinos. During the Laging Handa online press briefing, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) chief said that his office has received a communication from the Russian government that it is willing to enter into an agreement with the Philippines regarding the matter. “With this development, we can now legitimize the stay of our countrymen who are in Russia, under that same mechanics na nagpupunta (that are going) as tourists then convert it to working visa,” he said. “With this development, we can also legitimize the stay of our overseas workers in Russia,” he added. Previously, DOLE announced that the Philippines will resume the deployment of household service workers to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on March 31.
