Archaeology and Bible experts work together to explain the past
The biblical story of the Passion of Christ tells of how Jesus of Nazareth was condemned to death and nailed to the cross at the orders of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. Much of the story is based on accounts in the Bible's New Testament and not all of it is historically verified. Did Jesus Christ even exist? Little is known about those ancient days from a purely historical perspective. Even the method of Christ's execution — crucifixion — is hardly documented at all as a widespread punishment in antiquity. Gunnar Samuelson, a historian at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, studied all the Greek, Latin and Hebrew/Aramaic sources he could find to learn more about crucifixion. The research into his doctoral thesis in 2010 took him all the way back into antiquity — from Greek philosopher Homer into the 1st century CE. But Samuelson found that there was hardly any recorded evidence of crucifixion as a common method of execution from that period. Why India needs an independent media
The government is attempting everything it can to make sure that this does not happen, observes Aakar Patel. Illustration: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com I finished writing a book called the Price of the Modi Years a few days ago. It should be published later this year. It is a history of India since 2014 and I have examined the facts and the data on various parts of the polity like the economy, national security, governance, the judiciary and so on. Of the sources that have been quoted in the book, the one that has been cited most -- 85 times -- is a Web site called TheWire.in . Another Web site, Scroll.in has been cited 54 times. In comparison, the Times of India has 37 citations. The reason for this is that I have found that … [Read more...] about Why India needs an independent media

Desperate students turn to sex and OnlyFans after lockdown kills pub and shop jobs
Desperate students selling sex to make ends meet are behind a surge of pleas for help to the “prostitutes’ union”. The English Collective of Prostitutes said calls to its helpline from young people at university and college have risen by a third in 2021. And the campaigning group has seen a surge in the numbers selling sex since lockdowns sent student finances into freefall. Many sell explicit pictures of themselves on sites like OnlyFans as traditional bar and shop jobs have dried up. Now as many as eight students a day are calling for support and advice. And some universities are publishing guides on how to safely sell your body. Laura Watson, a spokeswoman for the group, said: “We have seen a significant increase in students going into prostitution as tuition fees have increased. “Some women in our group are working to pay off debts of £30,000 plus. “Since the pandemic a lot of women have been getting in touch starting sex work. “Jobs in shops and pubs, that … [Read more...] about Desperate students turn to sex and OnlyFans after lockdown kills pub and shop jobs
