LONDON: The Premier League's planned restart on Jun 17 received a further boost on Saturday when the latest batch of novel coronavirus tests produced no positive results. The tests were carried out on Thursday and Friday. "The Premier League can today confirm that on Thursday 28 May and Friday 29 May, 1,130 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, zero have tested positive," the league said in a statement. In the three previous rounds of testing since players resumed training there were 12 positives. No Premier League matches have been played since March but the league said on Thursday that the season will restart on Jun 17 provided all safety requirements have been met. Earlier on Saturday the government gave the green light for the resumption of elite sport in England from Monday, provided that strict safety guidelines outlined in its Stage Three protocol were adhered to. The Premier League's Chief Executive Richard Masters said he welcomed the … [Read more...] about No positive results in latest Premier League coronavirus tests

Finishing Premier League season will be good for football – Mourinho
REUTERS: Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho believes resuming the Premier League season, halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and playing it to completion will be good for the sport. Soccer in England was suspended indefinitely last month due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, which has caused more than 26,000 deaths in the United Kingdom. Premier League clubs are set to meet on Friday to discuss ways to finish the season. Spurs' first-team squad returned to the club's facilities for individual training sessions this week as they prepare for a possible resumption. "If we play the remaining nine matches this season it will be good for every one of us. It will be good for football, for the Premier League," Mourinho told Sky Sports https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/11980873/jose-mourinho-tottenham-boss-wants-2019-20-premier-league-season-to-finish. "If we play football behind closed doors (without fans) I'd like to think that football is never behind closed … [Read more...] about Finishing Premier League season will be good for football – Mourinho
Football: Premier League clubs committed to finishing season, but no deadline set
MANCHESTER: Premier League clubs on Friday (Apr 17) discussed possible models for finishing the current season but did not consider a specific date for play to resume while UK government lockdown restrictions remain in place. Representatives of the 20 teams took part in a conference call to look at various possible options for restarting the season and remain committed to completing the fixtures rather than voiding the season. But after the government announced on Thursday that the lockdown would remain in place for at least another three weeks, all options remain hypothetical. A Premier League spokesperson said: "Today's Shareholders' Meeting provided an opportunity to discuss possible scheduling models. It remains our objective to complete the 2019-20 season but at this stage all dates are tentative while the impact of COVID-19 develops. "In common with other businesses and industries, the Premier League and our clubs are working through complex planning scenarios. "We … [Read more...] about Football: Premier League clubs committed to finishing season, but no deadline set
Football: Early resumption of Premier League not safe for players, says Neville
REUTERS: Rushing to resume the 2019-20 Premier League season stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic could jeopardise the lives of players and staff, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said. English soccer has been suspended since Mar 13 due to the novel coronavirus, which has led to the deaths of more than 26,000 people in Britain. Still, the minister responsible for sport has held talks with the league on competition returning as soon as possible. "If people are really serious about putting health first we would not be discussing football returning at this moment," eight-times Premier League winner Neville told Sky Sports. "The minute one member of staff or player goes into intensive care, what are they going to do? That's the bit on one shoulder telling them: 'It's a risk.' They really aren't sure at this time how to deal with it." Premier League clubs will meet on Friday to discuss ways to finish the season and Neville said the prospect of losing money from … [Read more...] about Football: Early resumption of Premier League not safe for players, says Neville
Football: Premier League agrees five substitutes for season restart
LONDON: Premier League clubs will be able to use five substitutes, rather than the usual three, when the season resumes on Jun 17, it was announced on Thursday (Jun 4). The changes will be temporary to mitigate the packed schedule clubs will have after a three-month suspension to the season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 92 outstanding fixtures with the majority of teams facing nine matches in a six-week period. "For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players," a Premier League statement said after a meeting of shareholders on Thursday. "This is in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board last month." Clubs will be able to have nine substitutes on the bench, up from the usual seven. … [Read more...] about Football: Premier League agrees five substitutes for season restart
