Football: Tottenham captain Lloris praises ‘professional’ Alli

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has lauded Dele Alli for the way he has responded after being prevented from leaving the club. It appeared the England international would move from the north London side during the January transfer window having beeb sidelined by manager Jose Mourinho, with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino reportedly keen to take Alli to Paris Saint-Germain on loan. Spurs, however, decided to keep Alli in their squad and the midfielder made his first Premier League start since the opening day of the season during Thursday's (Mar 4) 1-0 win against Fulham. France goalkeeper Lloris said he was pleased by the way Alli had put any "disappointment" aside. "Well, I don't want to talk about January. It's his personal situation and I don't want to talk on behalf of the club, I'm not the right person to do it," Lloris told reporters on Friday. "As a team-mate, he's always been professional. "He put his disappointment on the side and from day … [Read more...] about Football: Tottenham captain Lloris praises ‘professional’ Alli

Football: Liverpool scramble for answers as season collapses

LONDON: Mohamed Salah's angry shake of the head after being substituted in Liverpool's defeat to Chelsea was symbolic of the champions' intense frustration as their season unravels. Jurgen Klopp removed his top scorer just after the hour mark on Thursday (Mar 5) but it did not prevent a 1-0 defeat and a fifth straight home loss for the first time in their history. The wheels have come off quickly for Liverpool, who were crowned English champions last season for the first time since 1990. As recently as mid-January, Klopp's men were top of the league and in the title picture despite being hampered by a spate of injuries, most notably to central defender Virgil van Dijk. Up until their shock 1-0 defeat to Burnley in January they had not tasted defeat in the league at Anfield since April 2017. But now they have a fight on their hands just to qualify for the top four - an unthinkable situation after winning the title last year by 18 points. Liverpool have earned just 10 … [Read more...] about Football: Liverpool scramble for answers as season collapses

Kabak an injury doubt for Fulham clash as Liverpool suffer another injury blow

REUTERS: Liverpool's new signing Ozan Kabak became manager Juergen Klopp's latest injury headache ahead of Sunday's Premier League match against Fulham after the Turkish centre back picked up a knock against Chelsea. Defending Premier League champions Liverpool have had to contend with a number of injury setbacks in central defence this season, having lost first-team regulars Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries early on. Kabak, who joined Liverpool on loan from Schalke 04 at the start of February, has started the last five games for the Merseyside club, including Thursday's 1-0 defeat by Chelsea. "Ozan had yesterday after the game a little problem. He has played a lot of games now and we will see if he is ready for Fulham," Klopp told a news conference on Friday. "It doesn't look like in the moment, so we will have to find solutions." While Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson are also out injured, Klopp said Nathaniel Phillips, who missed the Chelsea match … [Read more...] about Kabak an injury doubt for Fulham clash as Liverpool suffer another injury blow

Guardiola hails special Man City squad as derby challenge looms

REUTERS: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said on Friday his current squad of players is among the hungriest of his managerial career following 21 successive wins in all competitions going into Sunday's Premier League derby with Manchester United. Spaniard Guardiola spent trophy-laden seasons with Barcelona and Bayern Munich before joining City ahead of the 2016-17 season and has since guided them to two league titles, three League Cups and the FA Cup. City are on course to add to their collection of silverware under Guardiola with a 14-point lead over second-placed United in the Premier League and the manager was asked how his current squad compares to his previous teams. "I had incredibly hungry teams in my career, lucky to be together in Barcelona and Bayern. To do what we've done in these four years, still winning ... these guys have something special," Guardiola told reporters. "It comes from themselves. It comes from inside, trying to win, to collaborate with … [Read more...] about Guardiola hails special Man City squad as derby challenge looms

Tim Southee reprimanded for showing dissent at umpire’s decision

Southee was found to have breached "Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel", a Level 1 breach. In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Southee, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period. The incident occurred in the first over of the match on Wednesday (March 3), when Southee shouted at the umpire in a disrespectful manner after a leg before wicket review taken against Australia skipper Aaron Finch was declared an umpire's call and given not out. Southee admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe and ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Wayne Knights, third umpire Shaun Haig and fourth official Chris Brown levelled the charges. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a … [Read more...] about Tim Southee reprimanded for showing dissent at umpire’s decision
