Other cities in Louisiana and similar-sized cities in the region charge similar hourly rates to park as Lafayette but many have a more modern system that makes it more user-friendly, a survey shows. The Acadiana Advocate surveyed other cities in Louisiana and five cities in states along the Gulf Coast to see how they do parking amid the current discussion on what is next for parking in downtown Lafayette. Some cities charged $1 per hour while some others, including three surveyed in Texas, do not have parking meters but have more options for surface parking and parking garages. Other cities, such as Shreveport, have easier means of payment through technology, including the Parkmobile app. The topic of parking will be the biggest issue in 2021 for the Downtown Development Association, which said last month it would take the lead on the issue. Brazil deforested 10,000 sq km of Amazon rainforest in 2019
BRASILIA: Deforestation of Brazil's Amazon rainforest was worse than previously reported in 2019, revised government data showed on Tuesday (Jun 9), during the first year of President Jair Bolsonaro, who is keen to develop the forest crucial to curbing global warming. Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE) recorded 10,129 sq km of deforestation for its benchmark annual period from Aug 2018 to Jul 2019. That's an area about the size of Lebanon and a 34.4 per cent rise from the same period a year earlier. The revision is higher than INPE's initial report of 9,762 sq km of forest destroyed during that period, an increase of 29.5 per cent. The 2019 data remains the highest level of deforestation seen in Brazil's Amazon since 2008, a level it had already hit prior to the revision. INPE generally revises the data every year for accuracy as a standard practice. Environmental advocates and scientific researchers blame the policies of right-wing Bolsonaro for … [Read more...] about Brazil deforested 10,000 sq km of Amazon rainforest in 2019
More admitted to drug rehab centre in 2019, driven by changes in law aimed at reducing relapse
SINGAPORE: The number of drug rehabilitation centre (DRC) admissions saw a sharp spike in 2019 following changes to the legislation, annual statistics released by the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) showed on Friday (Feb 7). A total of 2,080 inmates were admitted to the DRC in 2019, a 65 per cent jump from the 1,257 admitted the year before. There were 1,152 admissions in 2017. This is the first time SPS is sharing total figures for drug-related admissions. The spike comes after the Misuse of Drugs Act was amended in January last year to allow repeat drug abusers who have not committed other concurrent offences to be sent to DRC, in a move aimed at reducing relapse and improving reintegration. Previously, the DRC was reserved for first- and second-time drug abusers. Those arrested for the third time and more were subjected to long-term imprisonment. The DRC regime includes psychology-based correctional programmes, skills training as well as family support and religious … [Read more...] about More admitted to drug rehab centre in 2019, driven by changes in law aimed at reducing relapse
