iPhone 5: All the New Stuff

Bigger Screen The most noticeable change in the new iPhone is its larger, 4-inch screen. The display actually isn't any wider than the previous one, but instead extends length-wise to a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Its resolution is 1,136 x 640 pixels -- that's not quite high-def, but it still has the same pixel density -- what Apple calls a retina display. The taller screen allows for five rows of apps (plus the permanent row on the bottom), and Apple says its colors are better, too. LTE The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone with LTE connectivity, and it's going to work on the networks of AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, as well as many others across the globe. To accommodate so many different LTE bands, Apple had to split the iPhone 5 into three different models, only one of which works on CDMA networks. That's a departure from the "world phone" approach of the iPhone 4S, but at least Apple was able to integrate both the LTE and voice radios into the same chip, saving … [Read more...] about iPhone 5: All the New Stuff

Vaccitech, startup behind Oxford’s COVID-19 vaccine, files for US IPO

Biotech startup Vaccitech Plc, which owns the technology behind the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca Plc , filed for a US initial public offering. The British company plans to list the American depositary shares on the Nasdaq under the symbol "VACC". Vaccitech's revenue dropped about 30% to $4.8 million in the year ended Dec. 31, even as its net loss narrowed to $17.9 million from $22.7 million due to lower research and development expenses. The company noted in a filing that based on its understanding, it would not be entitled to receive any royalties or payments from sub-licensees from the commercialization of the AstraZeneca vaccine until after the pandemic is over. Vaccitech's preference for a U.S. listing to one in the UK could further undermine London's attempts to become a major financial hub, particularly after Brexit. The company is co-founded by Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at Oxford University, who … [Read more...] about Vaccitech, startup behind Oxford’s COVID-19 vaccine, files for US IPO

Digital pound would boost post-Brexit City of London, think-tank says

A digital pound must be at the heart of Britain's efforts to strengthen the City of London's global attraction as a financial centre after Brexit , think-tank CityUnited Project said on Friday. The finance ministry is due to set out proposals for making Britain's capital market more attractive after Amsterdam toppled London to become Europe's top share trading centre after the City was cut off from the European Union on Dec. 31. CityUnited Chairman Daniel Hodson said there is now a "swelling majority" in the City that believes it was better to focus on making the financial sector more competitive rather than delaying change in the hope of getting EU access. "A central bank digital currency (CBDC) should be a fundamental foundation for a competitive City after Brexit, otherwise China will steal a long march on us," Hodson told Reuters. China is planning to put its digital yuan to use at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. "The Bank of England is talking about a … [Read more...] about Digital pound would boost post-Brexit City of London, think-tank says

Apple confirms iMessage locks users into iOS, and putting it on Android would hurt Apple

I suppose it was clear all along that iMessage was one of the biggest factors locking iPhone users to the iOS ecosystem, but it's still quite shocking to see Apple executives talking so openly about it. Court documents related to the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple give an insight into just how valuable Apple sees the fact that iMessage exists only on the iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms. The documents show that in 2016, an unnamed Apple employee wrote in an email that "the #1 most difficult [reason] to leave the Apple universe app is iMessage… iMessage amounts to serious lock-in," to which Phil Schiller, an Apple executive in charge of the App Store, responded that "moving iMessage to Android will hurt us more than help us, this email illustrates why." But there's more. Read more : Is iOS 14.5 'battery recalibration' going to be the ultimate battery drain fix?
