Football: Juventus sack Sarri after Champions League exit

ROME: Serie A club Juventus have sacked title-winning coach Maurizio Sarri after only one season in charge, following the team's elimination from the Champions League in the round of 16 on Friday, the Turin club said in a statement. On Friday night, Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League, the competition they have set their hearts on winning for the first time since 1996, on away goals by Olympique Lyonnais despite winning the second leg 2-1. "Juventus Football Club announces that Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the First Team," the club said on its website. "The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus' history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football," it added. Sarri still being questioned about future despite Serie A title

TURIN, Italy: Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri was still being questioned about his future with the Turin side on Thursday despite leading them to a ninth successive Serie A title last month. Sarri's side staggered over the Serie A finish line and now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they host Olympique Lyonnais in a round of 16, second leg match on Friday The match was due to be played in March but postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lyon have a 1-0 lead and Sarri was asked during a pre-match news conference if he thought that his future could be decided on Friday. "I think that is painting our directors as amateurs," he replied. "I think the choice has been made, regardless of the result of tomorrow's game. That question suggests that they can get carried away on an emotional wave in the same way as fans do. "But if they’ve already decided to get a new coach, tomorrow won’t make any difference, nor will a victory." Sarri said he did not read or … [Read more...] about Sarri still being questioned about future despite Serie A title

Football: Juve’s Sarri says current season is most difficult in Serie A history

REUTERS: The current season has been the most difficult in Italian football history, Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri said on Saturday (Jul 25) as he tried to explain the Serie A leaders' inconsistent form over the last month. Although they have a five-point advantage with three games to play, Juve have only won once in their last five matches and have kept their lead because rivals Inter Milan and Lazio have also slumped. Serie A is being completed in a hectic six weeks after a three-month novel coronavirus stoppage and teams are having to cope with high temperatures, late finishes and empty stadiums. "What mark would I give Juventus so far? A good one because this is the most difficult championship in the history of Italian football," Sarri told reporters ahead of Sunday's match at home to Sampdoria. "In the light of the obvious difficulties, I think the team has performed well .... This is an atypical phase. It's never happened before that we've played the championship in … [Read more...] about Football: Juve’s Sarri says current season is most difficult in Serie A history

Football: My future is tomorrow, says under-pressure Sarri

REUTERS: Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri has brushed off questions about his future with the Serie A leaders, saying that such speculation is simply part of the sport and that he intends to honour his contract. "My future is tomorrow," Sarri told reporters ahead of Monday's match at home to fourth-placed Lazio. "We have to concentrate on our the matches, starting from tomorrow. The rest is a consequence. "Asking me about if I am worried for my future is like asking a Formula One driver if he is afraid to go fast," added the 61-year-old. "It's part of my profession - if you win, you are doing well, if you lose, you are doing badly... Football is difficult, wherever you are." Sarri is in the first year of a three-season contract but it has been a bumpy ride even though the Turin side are closing in on a ninth successive title. He has struggled to impose his own style of football, having to build a team around 35-year-old forward Cristiano Ronaldo, and Juve have failed to win … [Read more...] about Football: My future is tomorrow, says under-pressure Sarri

No use analysing Juve’s ‘total blackout’ against Milan: Sarri

REUTERS: Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri says there is no point dwelling on their "total blackout" against AC Milan on Tuesday that saw them go from dominating the game for an hour to conceding three second-half goals in a 4-2 Serie A defeat. Adrien Rabiot and Cristiano Ronaldo had given Juventus the lead but Milan struck three times in five second-half minutes to stun the league leaders, who dropped their first points since the season restarted last month after the COVID-19 stoppage. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a penalty in the 62nd minute and Franck Kessie equalised four minutes later before Rafael Leao put them ahead one minute after that. Ante Rebic completed the scoring. "I think our first 60 minutes were world class. We were in total control and had this blackout," Sarri told sports streaming service DAZN. "There's not even much use thinking too much about it, because we have another game in three days. "It's usually not even possible to find the reasons for these … [Read more...] about No use analysing Juve’s ‘total blackout’ against Milan: Sarri
