Football: Arsenal ease past Dundalk to stay perfect in Europa League

LONDON: Arsenal maintained their perfect record in this season's Europa League as goals from Eddie Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny, Joe Willock and Folarin Balogun sealed a 4-2 win at Dundalk in their final Group B match on Thursday (Dec 10). Much-changed Arsenal, who rested several senior players having already qualified for the last 32, went ahead in the 12th minute when Nketiah chipped the ball over Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers for his fifth goal in all competitions this season. Elneny doubled the lead with a shot from distance six minutes later for his first Arsenal goal in three years, but the Irish side hit back through Jordan Flores who beat Runar Runarsson following a neat exchange with Michael Duffy. Bottom-placed Dundalk had the opportunity to equalise but Darragh Leahy's effort from point-blank range was blocked by Calum Chambers before Willock struck with a low shot after the interval to make it 3-1 to Arsenal. Substitute Balogun added a fourth with a side-foot finish … [Read more...] about Football: Arsenal ease past Dundalk to stay perfect in Europa League

Arsenal beat Birmingham, Kerr nets Chelsea hat-trick in Women’s Super League

REUTERS: Kim Little had one penalty saved and scored another as Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 win over Birmingham City and Sam Kerr bagged a hat-trick for Chelsea as they beat West Ham 3-2 in the FA Women's Super League on Sunday. With the game still scoreless, Arsenal's Little had her first penalty stopped in the 21st minute. However, Caitlin Foord and Jill Roord both scored in the second half before Little made amends from the spot three minutes from time to seal a 3-0 win. Australian striker Kerr scored three tap-ins for champions Chelsea as they beat London rivals West Ham but their normally rock-solid defence, which had only conceded three goals all season, was breached twice in a 3-2 win. American international Alex Morgan struck her first goal for struggling Tottenham Hotspur, in their first match under new manager Rehanne Skinner. Morgan converted a late penalty as Spurs secured their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Spurs back on top as Son and Kane sink Arsenal

LONDON: The Premier League's deadliest current double-act struck again as Son Heung-min and Harry Kane were both on target as Tottenham Hotspur beat Arsenal 2-0 to return to the top of the table on Sunday. Kane played in Son after 13 minutes for the South Korean to curl home a majestic opener for his 10th league goal of the season, much to the delight of the 2,000 fans in attendance. Son repaid the favour on the stroke of halftime as Kane lashed in his side's second. Victory means Jose Mourinho's side move two points clear of Chelsea who had claimed top spot on Saturday. They have 24 points from 11 games and are unbeaten in the league since losing on the opening day of the season. Arsenal were ineffective in attack despite having almost 70per cent possession, although they did threaten in the second half with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris making a couple of saves. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headed their best chance over as the visitors were unable to salvage anything. Arsenal … [Read more...] about Spurs back on top as Son and Kane sink Arsenal

Football: Mourinho calls for passionate support in derby against Arsenal

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur will only benefit from the return of fans for Sunday's Premier League home game against Arsenal if they are there to get behind the team and not just soak up the atmosphere in the stadium, manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday. London has been placed under Tier 2 COVID-19 restrictions by the British government, paving the way for a limited return of fans to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time since March. When asked if the return of spectators would give the Premier League leaders an added boost, Mourinho said: "It depends on the fans, their profile, the way people will face the game. "Do they want to go to the most beautiful stadium in England and enjoy that? Or do they want to go to play the game? If they want to enjoy the stadium and their passion for football, I don't think it makes a big difference. "If they want to go there and play, wear a Tottenham shirt and play the game, that can give a little more motivation and pleasure for … [Read more...] about Football: Mourinho calls for passionate support in derby against Arsenal

Football: Fans will want defensive Spurs to attack Arsenal, says Redknapp

LONDON: Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur must resist the temptation to adopt a pragmatic style of play and attack struggling Arsenal on Sunday as their fans will demand it, former player and pundit Jamie Redknapp has said. Jose Mourinho's Spurs have the best defensive record in the league and moved to the top of the standings with a counter-attacking strategy against top teams such as Manchester City while high-scoring Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw. However, Redknapp believes those tactics will not fly against Arsenal in what is usually a fiery derby, especially with 2,000 fans set to return to the stadium for the first time amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "Jose has got them working very hard for each other defensively ... They're sitting ever so deep, they're organised," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "If it was a full house they'd demand them to go forward ... they want to see good football, they've been used to it over the years. "If Harry Kane and Heung-min Son want to … [Read more...] about Football: Fans will want defensive Spurs to attack Arsenal, says Redknapp
