Azerbaijan’s exiled champions dream of post-war homecoming
BAKU: Azerbaijan's soccer champions for the last seven years, Qarabag FC have hoped for a different sort of victory since war returned to the region they were forced to flee nearly 30 years ago. The exiled club, known as "The Barcelona of the Caucasus", have ambitions to return to Aghdam, a city near the front line of a conflict with ethnic Armenian forces over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. Qarabag's sometimes bellicose attitude has earned them support across Azerbaijan but courted controversy elsewhere. The club were reprimanded by UEFA for a military salute during a match in Poland last month. "We just wanted to support the Azeri people at such a tough moment, support the Azeri soldiers liberating our lands," Maksim Medvedev, Qarabag's 31-year-old captain, told Reuters at the club's base on the edge of the capital Baku. PSG then also left the field at the Parc des Princes. "Our players have taken a decision NOT TO go back on the pitch after our Assistant Coach Pierre Webo has been exposed to racist behaviour by the 4th Official," Istanbul Basaksehir said on Twitter. The game, which was suspended in the 13th minute, did not resume and European soccer's governing body UEFA said the rest of the match had been rescheduled for Wednesday at 1755GMT. Rugby-Pumas captain, players suspended over racist social media posts
MELBOURNE: Pablo Matera has been stripped of the Argentina captaincy and suspended along with team mates Guido Petti and Santiago Socino for posting racist comments on social media, the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) said on Tuesday. The scandal has thrown the Argentina camp into crisis days before their final Tri-Nations match against Australia in Sydney on Saturday. The UAR said its board had met urgently after revelations of the players' "discriminatory" posts between 2011 and 2013. "The Argentine Rugby Union strongly repudiates the discriminatory and xenophobic comments published by members of the Los Pumas squad on social networks," the UAR said in a statement. "Although the messages were expressed between 2011 and 2013 ... the Argentine Rugby Union condemns any expression of hatred and we consider it unacceptable that those who express them represent our country." The UAR said it had requested Pumas staff propose a new captain to the board and have the players stood … [Read more...] about Rugby-Pumas captain, players suspended over racist social media posts
