‘Mean’ police officer who lied about having cancer to get out of work sacked

A police officer used a "disturbing level of meanness and malice" by falsely claiming she had cancer to get out of work. Police Constable Olivia Lucas resigned from Hampshire Constabulary ahead of the disciplinary hearing which would have removed her from the job. Between October 2018 and July 2019 the New Forest officer lied to colleagues and supervisors about having leukaemia and that she was receiving treatment at a specialist hospital. Concerned about her health, colleagues carried out fundraising events to raise money for her. She set out to "destroy the relationships and reputations" of colleagues by sending a retired police officer a fabricated County Court Judgment (CCJ) implicating a colleague, as well as a faked surveillance log and false messages from the Professional Standards Department, a panel found. She also claimed to have received a number of offensive and threatening messages from other serving officers which she had actually sent herself. Ms Lucas was … [Read more...] about ‘Mean’ police officer who lied about having cancer to get out of work sacked

Commentary: What slowing growth means for the man in the street

SINGAPORE: The big news two weeks ago was that Singapore’s economic growth had slowed to 0.1 per cent in the second quarter of this year – the slowest seen in a decade. The main drag was manufacturing, with the electronics and precision engineering sectors especially affected. I myself was surprised by how weak the growth data was, which was way below what even the most bearish economist was predicting. For non-economists, let’s cut through the statistics being hurled to and fro. Here is my take for ordinary folks out there: QUESTION: AS AN AVERAGE SINGAPOREAN, SHOULD I BE WORRIED? I’m with the Ministers who’ve taken to Facebook on this one. The decade-low growth has triggered some concerns that a recession is headed our way, and the possibility is indeed real. But don’t panic – yet. There may be a potential technical recession, which is a sequential slowdown that stretches into the third quarter. What it might possibly lead to in a worst-case scenario is a … [Read more...] about Commentary: What slowing growth means for the man in the street

Growing diversity means common spaces must be deliberately nurtured: Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE: The growing diversity in Singapore means common spaces here will be harder to maintain and must be deliberately nurtured and expanded, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Friday (Jun 21) at an international interfaith forum. His speech brought the four-day International Conference on Cohesive Societies to a close. It was attended by about 1,000 delegates from nearly 40 countries. Mr Heng touched on how Singapore has sought to build cohesion over the years in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society. He highlighted the policy that ensures public housing estates have a balanced mix of ethnic groups, the introduction of common spaces such as hawker centres and community centres, the importance of shared experiences such as National Service, as well as the effort to conserve cultural and religious landmarks. "But like most other countries, our demography is evolving. Life experiences and needs are also more varied. So Singapore is more diverse today … [Read more...] about Growing diversity means common spaces must be deliberately nurtured: Heng Swee Keat

‘It means so much’: Liverpool beat Tottenham to win sixth European Cup

MADRID: Jurgen Klopp admitted his Liverpool team were overcome with emotion after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to win Saturday's (Jun 1) all-English Champions League final in Madrid and take the trophy for the sixth time in the club's history. Mohamed Salah's second-minute penalty and a late Divock Origi goal settled what was not a classic at the Metropolitano Stadium, as Liverpool made up for their defeat in last year's final against Real Madrid and the deflation of missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City. "We were all pretty much crying on the pitch, because it was so emotional, it was so big, it means so much to us," Klopp said. The revered German has his first trophy as Liverpool manager, three and a half years on from his arrival at the club. This result saw him end a run of six straight defeats in finals. For Salah there was redemption after injury ruined his night against Real a year ago, and for Liverpool it is now half a dozen European Cups, … [Read more...] about ‘It means so much’: Liverpool beat Tottenham to win sixth European Cup

Andrew Cuomo’s Nursing Home Shield Means ‘They Got Away with Killing Our Mom’

This story is co-published with The Daily Poster For Vivian Rivera-Zayas and her family, the troubles began in January 2020 after her 78-year-old mother Ana Martinez experienced complications from knee-replacement surgery and doctors sent her to Our Lady of Consolation, a nursing home in West Islip, New York, for a few weeks of therapy. Ana was supposed to return to her Williamsburg apartment by the end of the month, but her discharge was postponed again and again. Then came New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo 's March 12 order locking down nursing homes in response to COVID-19. Without daily visits from her family or much access to the Spanish-language newscasts the Puerto Rican native preferred, Ana had little understanding of how the pandemic was spreading across the country and zeroing in on elderly care facilities. At the end of March, Our Lady of Consolation staff told Ana's daughter Vivian over the phone that it would be promptly discharging Ana, even though by … [Read more...] about Andrew Cuomo’s Nursing Home Shield Means ‘They Got Away with Killing Our Mom’
