Keith Branscombe, who revolutionized the look of the Toronto Star, has died
Keith Branscombe set out to make the Toronto Star the best designed paper in the country. The assistant managing editor of graphics in the 1980s and ’90s at the Star, Branscombe revolutionized the paper’s look and shaped the design department. He also helped implement a major redesign of the paper in 1993. He and his team won numerous honours including the renowned Society of Newspaper Design gold award for the innovative “What’s On” entertainment section in 1985, introduced in the Star earlier that year. “We live in a visual world and our readers are right to expect as high a quality of design in their daily newspaper as they find in any other medium,” he said at the time. Those words still ring true today. Branscombe died Friday from complications during cancer treatment surgery. He was 82 years old.
