If you've been having trouble sleeping lately, the hot humid nights might be to blame. Warm, tropical air washing across Aotearoa from New Caledonia is the reason behind our warm, muggy evenings, as well as possibly our restless nights and bad hair days. For the past few days, parts of the North Island, especially Auckland, Northland, and Waikato have seen humid weather and warm temperatures linger. Niwa’s flagship research vessel RV Tangaroa is nearing the end of its Antarctic voyage, but not without passing through some rough seas on the way. The 45-day voyage set sail towards the Southern Ocean and Ross Sea on January 11, with the purpose of studying the effectiveness of the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area , established in 2017.
