SINGAPORE - After meeting weekly for 12 years to play the ukulele together, Dick Yip & his Minstrels had to call off their Wednesday jam sessions because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The amateur group, which has about 50 active members, is part of Serangoon Community Club's wellness programme that encourages seniors to stay socially connected. In lieu of meeting at the club, the group's founder Dick Yip, 72, moved their gatherings online, using Facebook's livestreaming function for the first time. "We've had to rethink and improve our use of technology. The physical closeness is missing, but we are bonding through technology," says Mr Yip, a retired physical education teacher who has been using Facebook for more than 10 years. He and his wife Daisie, 70, a part-time education consultant and lecturer, have two daughters and five grandsons. With her help, he has digitised song sheets with chords that he customised to suit the Minstrels' skill levels. Van Morrison Delivers Some Self-Aware Soul on New Song ‘Latest Record Project’
Van Morrison has shared the title track from his new double album, Latest Record Project: Volume 1 , set to arrive May 7th via Exile/BMG. “Latest Record Project” is a cheeky bit of classic yet self-aware soul. It finds Morrison pairing vintage sonics — Hammond organ, shuffling drums, backing vocalists cooing “sha-la-la” — with the musings of an artist who has a back catalog packed with hits but hasn’t ceased making new music: “Have you got my latest songs I’m singing?/You got my latest songs I’m singing?/Not something from so long ago/Not something that you might want to know/But something I can relate to in the present.” In a statement, Morrison said: “I’m getting away from the perceived same songs, same albums all the time. This guy’s done 500 songs, maybe more, so hello? Why do you keep promoting the same 10? I’m trying to get out of the box.” Latest Record Project: Volume 1 boasts a whopping 28 songs, which Morrison wrote and recorded while in quarantine — not something … [Read more...] about Van Morrison Delivers Some Self-Aware Soul on New Song ‘Latest Record Project’
Van Morrison Previews New Album With Graceful ‘Dark Night of the Soul’
Van Morrison unveiled a tender new blues ballad “Dark Night of the Soul,” from his upcoming album, Three Chords and the Truth , out October 25th. “Dark Night of the Soul” boasts a vintage mid-tempo groove of shuffling drums, silky guitar, rolling piano and the occasional keening organ. Morrison moves with nimble grace over these instrumentals, really showcasing his perennial vocal prowess during the final two minutes of the track, most of which he spends riffing on the titular refrain with an array of deft runs. Morrison wrote all the tracks on Three Chords and the Truth , save for “If We Wait for Mountains,” which he co-wrote with Don Black. The album also features a duet with the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley (“Fame Will Eat the Soul”) and contributions from guitarist Jay Berliner. Ranjith not to enter the fray
Barely a day after he had expressed willingness to contest on the CPI(M) ticket from Kozhikode North segment, filmmaker Ranjith has backed out from entering the fray for the coming Assembly polls. He told the media that he wholeheartedly supported incumbent legislator A. Pradeepkumar, who would be running for the fourth time in a row from the segment. The CPI(M) district secretariat, which met here on Wednesday, favoured the candidature of Mr. Pradeepkumar. Party sources said that a section of leaders was against the renomination of Mr. Pradeepkumar. Speculations were rife over the party fielding Mr. Ranjith as Mr. Pradeepkumar completed three consecutive terms. Incidentally, Mr. Pradeepkumar is also close to Ranjith as well. Mr. Pradeepkumar has been able to strike a chord with the urban middle-class voters ever since he defeated Congress leader the late A. Sujanapal from Kozhikode-I segment in 2006. However, he lost to Congress leader M.K. Raghavan, who is equally popular, from … [Read more...] about Ranjith not to enter the fray

Four months after the opening race was called off amid last-minute pandemonium the Formula One season finally gets underway this weekend in Austria. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft, File) SPIELBERG, Austria — Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton called out rival teams on Thursday for not doing enough to combat racism, and said the sport still needs to push for more diversity. Hamilton has spoken widely about racism in recent weeks following the killing of George Floyd — a handcuffed and unarmed Black man — by a police officer in Minneapolis in May. And Hamilton’s Mercedes team will be competing in an all-black car — instead of the usual silver — as a statement against racism when the season starts on Sunday in Austria. But Hamilton, the only Black driver in F1, said he’d like to hear more from other teams — and … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton calls out rival teams for being silent on racism
