LONDON: S&P Global is in advanced talks to buy London-based IHS Markit for about US$44 billion in a deal that would combine two major data providers, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. A person familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that S&P Global was nearing a deal to buy IHS. The deal, which at that price would be the largest of the year, could be announced as soon as Monday, according to the WSJ report. S&P Global and IHS did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. S&P Global provides debt ratings of sovereigns, companies, as well as data to capital and commodity markets around the world. IHS' diverse set of businesses range from selling data on automotive and technology industries to publishing Jane's Defence Weekly. TOKYO/NEW YORK -Sony Corp will buy AT&T Inc's animation business Crunchyroll for US$1.175 billion, the two companies said on Thursday, as the Japanese electronics conglomerate aims to beef up its entertainment content and distribution businesses. The deal will give Sony access to Crunchyroll's 3 million paying subscribers across more than 200 countries and regions, helping Sony compete more globally with entertainment giants such as Netflix. Sony's Funimation Global Group, a U.S. animation distributor with 1 million paying subscribers, will own Crunchyroll, currently part of AT&T's WarnerMedia segment. AT&T has been looking to monetize its non-core assets since CEO John Stankey took over in June. REUTERS: U.S. corporations are sitting on record amounts of cash to reduce shock caused by the coronavirus pandemic, S&P Global Ratings said on Tuesday. Cash and investments owned by non-financial and non-utilities corporate issuers jumped 30per cent to an all-time high of US$2.5 trillion in the first half of 2020, the ratings agency said a statement. Those companies have increased their debt levels by 9per cent to nearly US$8 trillion, S&P Global Ratings said, adding that the U.S. Federal Reserve's plan to maintain interest rates near zero for at least another three years will help companies that may need to take on more debt if the health crisis worsens. "S&P Global Ratings believes near-term economic uncertainty likely will keep balance sheets relatively conservative," the ratings agency said.
