REUTERS: Shares of Nvidia Corp rose 6per cent on Monday after it announced a US$40 billion deal to buy UK-based chip designer Arm from Japan's SoftBank Group Corp that, if completed, would be the chip industry's biggest ever merger. The deal vaults Nvidia into the very top echelon of the world's chip suppliers and its stock, which has more than doubled this year, gained 5.8per cent to US$514.9 in early trading. Shares in SoftBank, under pressure for months after a torrid year dominated by the troubles of its WeWork shared office venture, jumped 10per cent. A host of analysts were quick to flag significant regulatory hurdles including from China for the buyout, which is seen to have big implications for the global semiconductor landscape. "Although Nvidia had success in attaining regulatory approval from China for its Mellanox acquisition earlier in 2020, the magnitude and significance of this potential deal will undergo heightened scrutiny," Morningstar analyst Abhinav … [Read more...] about Nvidia jumps on US$40 billion chip deal; analysts expect tough scrutiny

Formula 1: Hamilton on brink of Schumi record after three-in-one win
LONDON: Six-times world champion Lewis Hamilton took his tally of Formula One wins to 90 and the brink of Michael Schumacher's record on Sunday (Sep 13), but he said it felt like he had just done three in a day. The Briton's latest victory , in a Tuscan Grand Prix that was twice red-flagged and re-started, left him one shy of the Ferrari great - a record once held up as a milestone to withstand the test of time. "Hectic," said the 35-year-old Mercedes driver, when asked to sum up his afternoon at Ferrari-owned Mugello in central Italy. "Such a roller-coaster ride, emotionally and physically." "It was all a bit of a daze. It was like three races in one day." Hamilton has won six races out of nine this season and, with a seventh title looking inevitable, the year has become a countdown to two of the greatest records in the sport - both owned by Schumacher. There are eight races remaining and it is inconceivable that Hamilton will not win at least one more. He has been … [Read more...] about Formula 1: Hamilton on brink of Schumi record after three-in-one win
Tuscan GP halted twice after crashes and safety cars
REUTERS: The first ever Tuscan Formula One Grand Prix at the Ferrari-owned Mugello circuit in Italy was stopped twice on Sunday after a spate of crashes and three safety car deployments. The red flag first came out when Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi, McLaren's Carlos Sainz, Haas's Kevin Magnussen and Williams' Nicholas Latifi collided at the end of a safety car period. Valtteri Bottas had been leading for Mercedes, with team mate Lewis Hamilton second, and controlling the pace. As the Finn prepared to accelerate away, the back-markers reacted as if the leaders had already re-started. Sainz hit the back of Giovinazzi's car as the Alfa swerved. "I think people were going before you'd gone," Mercedes told Bottas. Sainz reported that he and the others were OK. "The crash was really scary," he said. "It felt like at the back of the grid where I was that everyone in front of me thought the race was going and we were all flat out until someone realised the race was not on," … [Read more...] about Tuscan GP halted twice after crashes and safety cars
Congress rift widens with caustic G-23 meeting in Jammu
The internal differences in the Congress spilled out into the open on Saturday, with the dissenting group, or the ‘G-23’ , in a show of strength held a rally in Jammu ostensibly to felicitate Ghulam Nabi Azad on his retirement from Rajya Sabha but clearly challenging the party leadership. The party leadership has reacted cautiously and not commented about the possibility of disciplinary action against the participants. Also read: Sonia Gandhi to stay on as Congress chief until next AICC session The meeting was attended by senior Congress leaders including former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Anand Sharma, Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari, Raj Babbar and Vivek Tankha in addition to Mr. Azad. Facebook removes posts linking Oregon wildfires to activist groups
NEW YORK: Facebook has started removing false claims that the deadly wildfires in Oregon were started by various left-wing and right-wing groups, a spokesman for the social media company said on Saturday (Sep 12), after the rumours left state officials inundated with queries for information. Since early this week, state officials have been attempting to debunk misinformation on social media that has blamed both left-wing and right-wing groups for the fires that have killed at least six people in Oregon this week. Facebook, which earlier was attaching warning labels to such posts, decided to move to the stricter approach after "confirmation from law enforcement that these rumours are forcing local fire and police agencies to divert resources from fighting the fires and protecting the public", the spokesman, Andy Stone, said in a statement on Twitter. Stone called the decision "consistent with (Facebook's) past efforts to remove content that could lead to imminent harm given the … [Read more...] about Facebook removes posts linking Oregon wildfires to activist groups
