Libya's interior minister in the UN-recognized government narrowly escaped an assassination attempt Sunday on a highway near the capital, Tripoli. The motorcade of Fathi Bashagha "was fired on from an armored car while he was on the highway. His police escort returned fire. Two of the assailants were arrested and a third is in hospital," a source close to the interior minister told AFP news agency. "The minister is fine," the source added. The convoy came under heavy fire as Bashagha drove through the capital after visiting government facilities. Powerful minister Bashagha has served as interior minister in the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) since 2018. The 58-year-old is a political heavyweight, who has promised to end corruption in the North African country. TRIPOLI, Libya: The motorcade of the interior minister of Libya’s United Nations-backed government came under attack on Sunday (Feb 21) in the capital, Tripoli, a government spokesman said. Armed men opened fire at Fathi Bashagha’s motorcade on a highway in Tripoli, wounding at least one of his guards, said Amin al-Hashmi, a spokesman for the Tripoli-based Health Ministry. He said Bashagha survived the attack and his guards chased the assailants, killing one and detaining two others. Earlier on Sunday, Bashagha met with Mustafa Sanalla, head of Libya’s National Oil Corporation, to discuss the security of oil facilities and how to strengthen the corporation’s independence to “ensure a fair distribution of wealth among all Libyans”. An armoured vehicle opened fire on the minister’s convoy on the highway in the Janzur area, the Health Ministry’s media adviser, Amin al-Hashimi, wrote on Twitter, adding that Bashagha was unharmed. A guard in the minister’s convoy was wounded while one of the assailants was killed and two others arrested, according to the official. The Interior Ministry’s Facebook page posted photos of Bashagha inspecting a Tripoli branch of the law enforcement department. It was unclear whether these were taken prior to or after the attack. Libyan interior minister survives assassination attempt in Tripoli
Kindly Share This Story: The interior minister of Libya’s UN-backed government, on Sunday survived an assassination attempt by unidentified gunmen in the west of the capital Tripoli, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. “At 3 p.m. (1300 GMT), an assassination attempt targeted Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha as he was returning from his residence in Janzour district (western Tripoli). An armored Toyota opened fire on the minister’s motorcade using machine guns,” the statement said. Bashagha’s security guards fired back at the gunmen, killing a gunman and capturing two others, while one guard was injured, according to the ministry statement. The ministry confirmed that all necessary legal measures regarding the attempted assassination have been taken. Libya has been suffering insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
