In oil-rich Iraq, a few women buck norms, take rig site jobs

BASRA : It's nearly dawn and Zainab Amjad has been up all night working on an oil rig in southern Iraq . She lowers a sensor into the black depths of a well until sonar waves detect the presence of the crude that fuels her country's economy. Elsewhere in the oil-rich province of Basra, Ayat Rawthan is supervising the assembly of large drill pipes. These will bore into the Earth and send crucial data on rock formations to screens sitting a few meters (feet) away that she will decipher. The women, both 24, are among just a handful who have eschewed the dreary office jobs typically handed to female petroleum engineers in Iraq. Instead, they chose to become trailblazers in the country's oil industry , donning hard hats to take up the grueling work at rig sites. They are part of a new generation of talented Iraqi women who are testing the limits imposed by their conservative communities. Their determination to find jobs in a historically male-dominated industry is a striking … [Read more...] about In oil-rich Iraq, a few women buck norms, take rig site jobs

More than 13,000 training places for aerospace workers with enhanced training support package

SINGAPORE: Badly hit by the impact of COVID-19 on commercial aviation, Singapore’s aerospace industry is getting a lifeline with the extension of the enhanced training support package to the sector, providing workers with more than 13,000 highly subsidised training places. Part of the Stabilisation and Support Package announced by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat earlier this year, the package aims to encourage companies to upgrade their employees and position themselves for recovery in the future. Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing and Minister of State for Manpower and Education Gan Siow Huang announced the measures on Tuesday (Sep 1) during a visit to a Singapore Aero Engine Services Private Limited (SAESL) facility in Loyang. Mr Chan said the package was a demonstration of Singapore’s confidence that the sector would eventually recover. “Even as we’ve having a bit of lower demand now, we’re making full use of our time to make sure that our workers are ready … [Read more...] about More than 13,000 training places for aerospace workers with enhanced training support package

Commentary: Don’t waste Budget money. Here’s how to stretch your SkillsFuture dollars

SINGAPORE: If you want to amaze someone in a foreign country, tell them about Singapore’s SkillsFuture initiative. When I speak about it at conferences on the future of work, people from Kazakhstan to the US tell me that it sounds like some kind of miracle to wake up one day to find a new bank account in your name with free money to spend on upgrading yourself. And when I tell them many Singaporeans don’t take advantage of this money, their expression turns to horror. “Just give it to us!” they say, shaking their heads in incredulity. “We will use it!” Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, in rolling out Singapore Budget 2020 on Tuesday (Feb 18) announced even more SkillsFuture benefits and support for companies to retrain workers and redesign jobs. A one-off S$500 SkillsFuture top-up will be made available for every Singaporean aged 25 and above, while Singaporeans aged 40 to 60 will get an extra S$500 top-up. Binotto admits to questioning his role at suffering Ferrari

MONZA, Italy: Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has admitted questioning his role while Formula One's oldest and most successful team endure one of their worst seasons in decades. The Italians have not won a world championship since taking the constructors' title in 2008 and are languishing in fifth place overall ahead of a home Italian Grand Prix at Monza that threatens to plumb new depths. In Belgium last weekend, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel failed to qualify or finish in the top 10 and the team are now a massive 203 points adrift of dominant Mercedes after seven races. Binotto, who has spent his whole career at Maranello, told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper on Friday that Ferrari chairman John Elkann had called him to understand why it had gone so badly. He said he had never felt his job was in danger, however, because he knew he was supported by those above him and was not alone. "But I questioned myself, I reflected on whether I can be suitable for the role … [Read more...] about Binotto admits to questioning his role at suffering Ferrari

Choosing a College When You’re Neurodiverse

You’re in high school, looking at going to college. Lots to think about. For students like my son and I, there’s the additional wrinkle of neurodiversity —autism, ADHD , or dyslexia . How does that shape school decisions? When we were little, we were “children with autism,” which sounded like we had a disease. But we don’t. We’re just different. We gravitated to other kids who were different and as we grew older it became clear we are our own little tribe. There are times we wish we were like everyone else, and other times we’re happy to be unique. Many of us were put in special education classes or SPED. Most of us SPED students didn’t like the name or the stigma that went with it. We looked forward to leaving it behind when we got out of high school. A few years ago people started talking about neurodiversity. Neurological diversity. It’s an interesting concept. If autism or anything else is passed on through our genes , and you believe in evolution . . . it stands … [Read more...] about Choosing a College When You’re Neurodiverse
