Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to agree Nile dam in weeks

ADDIS ABABA: Leaders of Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt said they were hopeful that the African Union could help them broker a deal to end a decade-long dispute over water supplies within two or three weeks. Ethiopia, which is building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) which worries its downstream neighbours Egypt and Sudan, said it would fill the reservoir in a few weeks, as planned, providing enough time for talks to be concluded. Tortuous negotiations over the years have left the two nations and their neighbour Sudan short of an agreement to regulate how Ethiopia will operate the dam and fill its reservoir, while protecting Egypt's scarce water supplies from the Nile river. Ethiopia's water minister, Seleshi Bekele, said that consensus had been reached to finalise a deal within two to three weeks, a day after leaders from the three countries and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who chairs the African Union, held an online summit. Egypt’s Rameda gets requests to export COVID-19 drug: CEO

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt: Egypt's Rameda Pharmaceutical‮ ‬ has received requests to export Anviziram tablets, which are used to treat patients with the new coronavirus, to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Yemen, but needs a government approval first, its CEO told Reuters. The company said earlier this month it had started manufacturing Anviziram, the generic equivalent of the Japanese antiviral Avigan, and had also received an approval from the Egyptian Drug Authority to manufacture Remedsivir, a Gilead Sciences Inc antiviral used for treating COVID-19. Rameda, which listed 49per cent of its shares on the Egyptian exchange last year, has produced quantities enough Anviziram tablets to cover "appropriate numbers of patients in the Egyptian market," said its CEO Amr Morsy. The company is providing the drug to the Egyptian health ministry to be used in hospitals. Morsy said it would be available to the public before the end of July, adding its commercial price was still being negotiated. … [Read more...] about Egypt’s Rameda gets requests to export COVID-19 drug: CEO

Egypt surpasses 50,000 confirmed coronavirus cases

CAIRO: Egypt said it registered 1,218 new cases of the new coronavirus on Thursday (Jun 18), edging the total number of cases up to more than 50,000 a fortnight before it is set to further ease restrictions. The Arab world's most populous nation closed itself off in March to curb the spread of the disease, shutting schools, restaurants and halting almost all international flights. The pandemic shuttered Egypt's vital tourism industry, which the government says accounts for 5 per cent of economic output, but analysts say it may account for as much as 15 per cent if jobs and investment indirectly related to the industry are included. The country hopes to be able to welcome tourists back for the summer season and has said it plans to reopen its airports to scheduled international flights from Jul 1. The health ministry on Thursday said it registered a total of 50,437 cases of the coronavirus and 1,938 deaths. The country's higher education minister cited a study on Jun 1 … [Read more...] about Egypt surpasses 50,000 confirmed coronavirus cases

Coronavirus widens the cracks in Egypt’s cement industry

CAIRO: The coronavirus is putting Egypt's private cement industry under even more pressure. Already scrambling to respond to competition from a vast new factory owned by the military, the pandemic has stymied a nascent rebound in sales, raising the possibility of plant closures, industry executives and analysts say. Demand for cement in Egypt was on the decline when the military opened a US$1 billion factory in 2018 that added 13 million tonnes of annual capacity, on top of the country's existing 79 million tonnes. The plant in Beni Suef, 200km (125 miles) south of Cairo, has compounded a difficult market for foreign firms that spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying cement factories during a wave of privatisations in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The pandemic, however, has made the economics even worse and could lead to four or five closures among the country's roughly two dozen plants in the coming months, according to one senior company official, who declined to be … [Read more...] about Coronavirus widens the cracks in Egypt’s cement industry
