NEW YORK: The Los Angeles Lakers will switch to their "Black Mamba" jerseys in honour of the late Kobe Bryant when they seek a record-tying 17th NBA championship on Friday. The Lakers, who lead the Miami Heat 3-1 in the best-of-seven NBA Finals, are 4-0 this postseason when wearing the Bryant-designed alternate jerseys, which are black with gold trim and feature a subtle snakeskin pattern. Bryant's nickname was "Black Mamba". "It's always special to represent someone that meant so much, not only to the game but also to the Lakers organization for 20-plus years," Lakers forward LeBron James said after his team wore the jerseys in Game Two of the NBA Finals. "For us to honor him, being on the floor, this is what it's all about." The Lakers had originally planned to wear the jerseys for a potential Game Seven but decided move it up for Friday's game at Disney World in Florida, where the season resumed in July after a four-month COVID-19 hiatus. So you’ve ditched plastic straws and you're thinking of switching to an electric car . You spend your weekends at farmers' markets (toting your own reusable bag, of course), clothe yourself in fair trade fashion, and slather yourself in organic beauty products. You’re staying woke . Good on you. But did you know your jewellery could be irresponsibly sourced? READ: How eco-fashion is no longer a hippie pipe dream If you were on the market for an engagement ring or a dress watch, and wanted to know where the raw materials came from, you’d likely encounter a few dead ends. While it’s possible to find jewellers and watchmakers that use ethical diamonds in their designs, the same cannot be said of the gold used to set the stones or shape the watchcases. That’s because much of the gold mining industry is largely unregulated. Across the world, miners are often subject to poor and unsafe working conditions. You’ve probably read (right here on Channel NewsAsia ) about … [Read more...] about It’s not just diamonds – did you know your gold could be irresponsibly sourced?
As travel industry professionals, Sharifah Alawiyah and Jeeveraj Naufal have seen a lot of places for work – and that includes different types of accommodation. “We’ve stayed in many hotels, many bedrooms,” shared hubby Jeevaraj. So it wasn’t a far-fetched idea for the couple to take some inspiration from these when they engaged interior firm Fifth Avenue Interior for their 1,000 sq ft four-room HDB BTO flat. But it’s hardly a matter of cutting and pasting ideas – their home had to reflect who they were. “We are really simple people; we love functionality, practicality and something timeless, so this is where the house defines the both of us,” said Wiyah. “Basically, the colour themes that we chose – white, grey and black – are our favourite colours. To spice it up, we put in some gold as well.” The very first impression one gets when stepping into their home is of calm, understated luxury. This is thanks to the muted greys of the marble-textured floor tiles used … [Read more...] about A 1,000 sq ft BTO flat that’s black, white and grey – and inspired by hotel rooms
Clemence Feng and Candice Chua are video game enthusiasts and toy collectors who both love Japanese video games such as Final Fantasy, Persona, Kingdom Hearts and Yakuza. The couple also own two Shetland sheepdogs. So for their first marital home, the couple made sure it had to reflect their personalities and needs. “We wanted something that really reflected who we are as people, and that really served our purpose in terms of how we live and how we want to use the space,” said Candice, who works as an innovation centre manager. Meanwhile, hubby Clemence works in human resources. They engaged interior design firm Design 4 Space to transform their new 1,001 sq ft four-room HDB BTO flat in Woodleigh into a warm, welcoming home centred around gaming, with ample space for entertaining guests (and their doggos). The end result is a surprisingly grown-up and practical space done up in bold hues such as emerald green, dark blue and deep grey, with elegant wood, marble and … [Read more...] about A geeky couple’s 1,001 sq ft BTO flat with a gaming room and toys on display
Social media manager Nadiah Othman and her husband Ridzwan Ismail love things of sentimental value. “We are both very old souls,” said Ridzwan, who is also a design director. “We believe we were born in the wrong era. We imagine ourselves as adults in the 60s.” So naturally, they wanted their home, a 731 sq ft HDB BTO flat, to showcase their family heirlooms, their personalities, and their lifestyles. “We knew that we were coming in with some inherited pieces,” said Nadiah, referring to items such as a vintage Singer treadle sewing machine that had been with her family for many generations, and an antique marble-topped dresser that belonged to her grandmother. Referring to the dresser, she said: “It’s a beautiful Peranakan piece from the 1940s with accents like flower knobs, brass handles, and vintage tiles. When we inherited it, we knew this was what we would use to inform our design decisions throughout our home.” READ: A 1,000 sq ft BTO flat that’s black, … [Read more...] about How grandma’s Peranakan dresser inspired a 731 sq ft BTO flat that’s also a smart home
