CBSE Syllabus: No further slash in curriculum, Institutes

KOLKATA: CBSE schools have started sending notices to their Class-X board aspirants saying that there is no further reduction in the social science syllabus, in the wake of a ‘fake news’ that the Central Board of Secondary Education has again reduced the syllabus. The social science exams are scheduled for May 27. “This is fake. There has been no further reduction after what was done officially last year,” said Indrani Chattopadhyay, vice-principal of DPS Ruby Park. “For students, who are in the last leg of preparations, any news getting filtered down like this can cause excitement,” said Ayushman Sarkar, a Class-X student of DPS Ruby Park. Lakshmipat Singhania Academy has also taken cognizance of it. “We have told students to crosscheck with us or CBSE website,” said director Meena Kak. … [Read more...] about CBSE Syllabus: No further slash in curriculum, Institutes

Commentary: Go beyond addressing deliberate online falsehoods to encourage a thinking society

SINGAPORE: When you saw the post on social media a few years ago alleging that a local supermarket was selling “halal” pork, what did you do? Some instinctively shared it. In their Green Paper, the Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Law gave several examples of falsehoods that have been deliberately spread online, “to attack public institutions and individuals". "The aim is to sow discord amongst racial and … [Read more...] about Commentary: Go beyond addressing deliberate online falsehoods to encourage a thinking society

SINGAPORE: After MOE's announcement about reducing testing at certain educational milestones, many tuition centres have stepped forward to address parental concerns that the lack of testing would make it harder for them to assess how their child was doing in school. Singapore families spend a staggering amount of money on education including tuition. An HSBC survey sets the figure at around S$96,000, from primary school all the way to the undergraduate years. We rank third in such spending, after parents in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. The drivers behind this trend are diverse, though most parents would say they want to ensure their children keep up in a rigorous education system. Some also want their children to accelerate their learning, believing that this would either help them to nail the Direct School Admission selection or simply pave the way to a brighter future. The basic instinct behind these could be fear. Parents are fearful that they are not … [Read more...] about Commentary: What is lost when we spend more on tuition
