REUTERS: Newcastle United's new striker Callum Wilson promised the club's fans more goals after netting on his debut in a 2-0 Premier League win over West Ham on Saturday. The forward, who arrived at a club with a tradition of prolific goal-scorers from Bournemouth last Monday, said he was disappointed that no fans were in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that more goal celebrations were certain to come. "I'm going to have many years and many goals where St. James's Park is going to be full, and I'll be able to celebrate in front of a full house," he told Sky Sports. "I've come in the door and my job is to score goals obviously, and help the team get performances... I feel this is a great squad with great potential," he added. Newcastle manager Steve Bruce was impressed with Wilson and fellow debutant Jeff Hendrick, who set up Wilson's goal before scoring himself late on. "There was not much in it, and we have a striker who scored (a) typical striker's goal. … [Read more...] about Wilson promises Newcastle fans more goals after West Ham win

Ronaldo, stuck on 99 goals, doubtful for Croatia match
PORTO: Cristiano Ronaldo may have to wait a few days longer before he can attempt to score his 100th Portugal goal after a toe infection made him doubtful for Saturday's Nations League match at home to Croatia. Ronaldo, Portugal's all-time leading scorer and most capped player, has been stuck on 99 goals for 10 months since scoring in the 2-0 win away to Luxembourg in their last international. "I have a few doubts as to whether he will be fit," coach Fernando Santos told reporters. "Cristiano trained very well on Monday and Tuesday but on Wednesday had this pain in his toe. "It looked a bit like a bee sting but it turned out to be an infection. It has been treated with antibiotics and seems to be back to normal but we still have to evaluate it." There have been no international matches played in Europe since last November due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the postponement of Euro 2020 until next year. Ronaldo, 35, is bidding to become only the second player … [Read more...] about Ronaldo, stuck on 99 goals, doubtful for Croatia match
NHL on NBC: There’s no slowing down David Pastrnak
NBC’s coverage of the 2020-21 NHL season continues with Sunday’s matchup between the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. Coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET on NBC. You can watch the game online and on the NBC Sports app by clicking here . It feels like there’s a new stat every game to quantify how David Pastrnak has continued to become one of the best scorers in the NHL. Sunday’s game at Lake Tahoe was no different; for the second time in three games against Philadelphia this season, the Bruins top line winger netted a hat trick , his 10th in 160 regular season contests. Last weekend will be remembered more for the Bruins 90’s swag and Pastrnak’s Barbie Girl soundbite than anything that happened on the ice, and that’s what those events are all about. It is worth it, though, to contextualize just how dominant Pastrnak has become in his seventh full NHL season. Last season almost surely would have ended up his first with 50 goals if not for the pause and then postponement. … [Read more...] about NHL on NBC: There’s no slowing down David Pastrnak
Football: Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties to lift FA Community Shield
LONDON: Arsenal beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties on Saturday (Aug 29) to lift the Community Shield, the curtain-raiser for the English domestic season, after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw on a chilly afternoon at Wembley. Gunners captain and match goal-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang blasted home the final penalty of the afternoon to complete the north London side's second win over the league champions in the space of six weeks following a shortened summer break. "We are improving. There is still work to do but I'm really happy and it's an exciting time to be an Arsenal player," Aubameyang told BT Sport after the match. It was the Gunners' second trophy within a month following the side's FA Cup final win over Chelsea on Aug 1. The game was a very even and at times rather slow affair, with Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk having an early strike ruled out offside before Arsenal's opener, a well-worked move to break out of the champions' high press. Bukayo Saka took the ball … [Read more...] about Football: Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties to lift FA Community Shield
Premier League team prospects
REUTERS: Team-by-team prospects for the 2020-21 Premier League season. Part One (Arsenal to Leicester City). ARSENAL Manager: Mikel Arteta. Last season: 8th. Major signings: Willian (Chelsea), Gabriel Magalhaes (Lille), Cedric Soares (Southampton) Major Departures: Henrik Mkhitaryan (AS Roma) There were signs of improvement after Arteta replaced Unai Emery in December and engineered a respectable league finish and an FA Cup final win over Chelsea. The Community Shield season curtain-raiser win over Liverpool on penalties at Wembley has added to the air of optimism around the Emirates Stadium. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the league's second-top scorer last season with 22 goals but the Gabon international is in his final year and has yet to agree a new deal. There is also the question of whether Mesut Ozil plays a full part this season or finally ends his disappointing stay with the club. Arsenal will be hoping for a push towards the top four but it is … [Read more...] about Premier League team prospects
