Penguins score 3 goals in 61 seconds to beat Rangers

For the first 15 minutes on Sunday night it looked as if the Pittsburgh Penguins were going to have their hands full with the New York Rangers. They were being badly out shot, dramatically outplayed, and even found themselves down on the scoreboard thanks to an early goal from Mika Zibanejad . Then everything changed in 61 seconds. That brief stretch late in the first period where the Penguins received goals from John Marino , Kasperi Kapanen , and Sidney Crosby in just one minute of clock time would be all the offense they would need to chase Rangers starter Alexandar Georgiev from the game and pick up a huge 5-1 win in the East Division playoff race. Crosby’s goal was an especially impressive play that saw him split the Rangers’ defense and beat Georgiev off the rush. You can see all three goals in the video above. Evgeni Malkin and Zach Astron-Reese added a late insurance goals for the Penguins while Casey DeSmith stopped 23 out of 24 shots for the win. The Buzzer: Big games for Wedgewood, Gourde and Kapanen; Rare goal for Jensen

Three Stars 1. Scott Wedgewood , New Jersey Devils. The Devils needed their goalie to be great on Sunday to win, and luckily for them he was. Wedgewood stopped all 40 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season to lift the Devils to a 1-0 win over the Boston Bruins. Rangers crowned champions as Gerrard denies Celtic 10 in a row

Steven Gerrard's side had moved to the brink of glory on Saturday, a 3-0 home win over St Mirren leaving them needing just one more point to get over the line – provided Celtic triumphed at Tannadice less than 24 hours later. However, with their Old Firm rivals only able to draw 0-0 on the road, Rangers were able to celebrate a first top-flight title in Scotland since the 2010-11 season, in the process ending Celtic's run of success in the competition. Securing the league also gives Gerrard the first trophy of his managerial career in his third season in charge at Ibrox. They had finished second in the previous campaigns under the former England international, as well as losing the 2020 League Cup final. Gerrard said after the victory over St Mirren that the club had been "to hell and back over the past 10 years", having been forced to start afresh in the fourth tier of Scottish football following major financial problems, including liquidation. 55 - @RangersFC have won … [Read more...] about Rangers crowned champions as Gerrard denies Celtic 10 in a row

Rangers’ Positive Roll Ends With A Thud, As Crosby, Penguins Start Fast, Cruise To Easy Victory

PITTSBURGH (CBSNewYork/AP) — Pittsburgh allowed an early three-goal lead to slip away in a loss to Philadelphia earlier in the week. The Penguins didn’t make the same mistake Sunday against the New York Rangers . Sidney Crosby capped Pittsburgh’s three-goal outburst in the first period, and the Penguins beat the Rangers 5-1. Crosby scored his eighth of the season, Kasperi Kapanen netted his sixth, and John Marino his first as Pittsburgh scored three goals on six shots in the opening period. “We don’t want to be a team that sits on leads,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’re at our best when we continue to score. I thought we did a better job of managing the game.” "We played a pretty solid first period as a team. Kind of had a bad stretch of two minutes, and it cost us."
