21 Notorious Scott Rudin Stories

Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images Prolific producer Scott Rudin came under renewed scrutiny last week after a Hollywood Reporter exposé detailed his alleged abusive behavior toward his assistants, including hurling a baked potato at one and smashing a computer monitor on another’s hand . But the EGOT winner’s temperament is not a revelation in the industry, where he has a long-established record of combative conduct — in 1998, Fortune magazine described Rudin as being famous for “his habit of throwing phones, verbally abusing staffers, and expecting 16-hour workdays and seven-day workweeks.” He told The Wall Street Journal in 2005 that he had burned through 119 assistants in five years (some workers estimated the number would be 250 or more if it included those fired during their two-week trial periods). From his pushing people out of moving cars to engaging in a bitter feud with Harvey Weinstein , here are 21 tales about Rudin that helped build his unpleasant … [Read more...] about 21 Notorious Scott Rudin Stories

S’poreans marrying foreigners: 3,900 couples a year do pre-marriage visa assessment before saying ‘I do’

SINGAPORE - An average of 3,920 transnational couples a year between 2015 and 2020 applied to undergo an assessment before they say "I do" that looks at the likelihood of the foreigner qualifying for a long-term visit pass after the marriage to the Singaporean. The Pre-marriage Long Term Visit Pass Assessment also allows such couples to "exchange key information about themselves", including their spouses and children from previous marriages, their income and criminal records, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It was introduced in January 2015 amid a significant number of transnational marriages here. In 2019, 4,426 Singaporean men wed non-resident brides - making up one in five marriages involving at least one citizen, according to the Government's Population In Brief 2020 report. Social workers and lawyers who work with foreign wives said some of these couples marry after meeting a few times, or after a very brief courtship, and hardly know their … [Read more...] about S’poreans marrying foreigners: 3,900 couples a year do pre-marriage visa assessment before saying ‘I do’

Compassion Privilege: Why Caring People Are Sometimes Unkind

This post is published in three parts. Please click on the link below for Part 2. For those of us who hold compassion as a central value, and perhaps are actively working to create a more compassionate world, one of the most frustrating and demoralizing experiences is having to deal with uncompassionate people. Ironically, though, our frustration with those who are disconnected from their compassion is often precisely what causes us to disconnect from our own compassion. We may struggle to feel charitable, to maintain a sense of goodwill toward these individuals, and we may therefore interact with them in a way that brings about the opposite effect of what we want. For example, perhaps you explain to someone that eating more vegan foods supports the well-being of animals … [Read more...] about Compassion Privilege: Why Caring People Are Sometimes Unkind
