Governor Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” accused Republicans of misusing the “instrument of the law” by passing the transgender bills and overriding his veto shortly thereafter. Anchor Chuck Todd said, “This was the third bill targeting transgender youth in some form and the issue in some form that passed the legislature. Did you veto this third bill because of the specifics of the bill, or how much of it was enough already with these bills that seem to be in search of a problem that didn’t exist?” Hutchinson said, “Each bill has to stand on its own. I signed two that I thought made sense. One was girls in sports, trying to protect women’s sports. The other one was supporting medical conscience, that doctors can claim a conscience reason if they want to deny a particular procedure, but they have to do emergency care. So those are two bills that I signed. The third one was not well done. It did not protect the youth. It interfered with the government getting … [Read more...] about Hutchinson on Transgender Bill: Republicans Who Fear the Future Are Misusing the ‘Instrument of the Law’

Women’s groups call for greater workplace flexibility
Greater flexibility in work arrangements was a key theme at a dialogue between women's groups and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Ms Indranee Rajah, last night. Ms K. Thanaletchimi, honorary general secretary of the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO) and president of NTUC Women and Family Unit, for instance, suggested that the Government could educate and encourage employers, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, "so that women don't have to retreat from the workplace when they need to care for their families". The two-hour dialogue at the SCWO headquarters in Waterloo Street was organised for female leaders and women's groups to engage with the Government. Dr June Goh, president of the SCWO, suggested that employers could convert childcare leave entitlements to additional parent-care leave, especially for older women whose children are grown up. Ms Corinna Lim, executive director of the Association of Women for Action and Research, noted that … [Read more...] about Women’s groups call for greater workplace flexibility
Migration laws allow, but Covid forbids
WHILE vaccines, vaccine passports and vaxications are tempting, reachable goals to restore normalcy in travel and migration mobility, the Covid-19 virus remains the indecipherable variable holding up a new normal. For international travel “to come back,” more people must be vaccinated, and a government has to feel that it is safe to open its borders to visitors — and migrants. On April 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that people who are fully vaccinated with a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United States. An individual is considered “fully vaccinated two weeks after having received the last required dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.” UK’s Global Travel Taskforce sets out a new traffic light system and green watchlist to safely reopen international travel. The traffic light system categorizes countries “based on risk alongside the restrictions required for travel and the vaccine roll-out from … [Read more...] about Migration laws allow, but Covid forbids
Quantic Dream responds to Paris Court of Appeals judgement to “set the record straight”
Quantic Dream, developer of PlayStation exclusives Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, has posted a new statement stating an investigation has concluded there was no "'toxic atmosphere' or any kind of discrimination in the studio" in order to "set the record straight". The statement comes after the studio was accused of a hostile work environment and sued by a former employee back in 2018 . The victim in the case quit their post due to offensive photoshopped images of employees being circulated at the studio, images of which came to light after a damning joint investigation into toxic workplace culture was undertaken by a team of journalists at French publications Le Monde, Canard PC, and Mediapart. At the time, Quantic Dream boss David Cage said he was "shocked" by the allegations, and in a statement published to the studio's Twitter account, Quantic Dream branded the claims by its own staff as "slanderous" and part of a "smear campaign" , and then sued the publications. … [Read more...] about Quantic Dream responds to Paris Court of Appeals judgement to “set the record straight”
Why India needs an independent media
The government is attempting everything it can to make sure that this does not happen, observes Aakar Patel. Illustration: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com I finished writing a book called the Price of the Modi Years a few days ago. It should be published later this year. It is a history of India since 2014 and I have examined the facts and the data on various parts of the polity like the economy, national security, governance, the judiciary and so on. I do not want to talk about the contents of the book because it has too much detail and in any case some of my views may already be familiar to readers. What I did want to talk about was where some of the material was taken from. Of the sources that have been quoted in the book, the one that has been cited most -- 85 times -- is a Web site called TheWire.in . Another Web site, Scroll.in has been cited 54 times. In comparison, the Times of India has 37 citations. The reason for this is that I have found that … [Read more...] about Why India needs an independent media
