65% low, lower-middle income countries slashed education budgets after COVID-19 outbreak: World Bank report
Education budgets were cut by 65% of low and lower-middle income countries after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic while only 33% of high and upper-middle income countries did so, according to a report by the World Bank. The report, compiled in collaboration with UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, said the current levels of government spending in low and lower-middle income countries fall short of those required to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “In order to understand the short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education budgets, information was collected for a sample of 29 countries across all regions. The sample represents about 54% of the world’s school and university aged population. Global Covid-19 caseload tops 116.8 million
WASHINGTON: The total number of global Covid-19 cases has topped 116.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.59 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University . In its latest update on Monday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering ( CSSE ) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 116,817,145 and 2,592,768, respectively. The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 28,991,537 and 524,987, respectively, according to the CSSE. India comes in second place in terms of cases at 11,210,799. Brazil’s Fantaspoa, South America’s Largest Genre Festival, Unveils First Half Of 2021 Program
EXCLUSIVE: The largest genre film festival in South America, Fantaspoa , has unveiled the first half of its program for its seventeenth edition, running April 9-18. Scroll down for the full list. Like last year, the fest has been forced to run online due to the ongoing pandemic. It will be held completely free of charge with films available to stream in Brazil via a renewed partnership with Brazilian horror streaming service Darkflix. Last year’s event attracted more than 67,000 viewers. While the films are geo-locked, and limited to 3,000 viewers per screening, Q&As and workshops will be available to view anywhere in the world. There are 25 feature films confirmed to date, including three world premieres, five international premieres, and 10 Latin American premieres. Titles arrive from previous fests including San Sebastian, Rotterdam and Toronto.
