Ontario universities urge government to help with $1 billion COVID costs

Ontario universities have been hit with $1 billion in costs and lost revenue because of COVID-19 and are now making a public appeal to the province for help. The Council of Ontario Universities, in a statement posted Friday on its website, says while institutions were able to find $500 million in one-time savings, they are still short the remaining $500 million and there is an “urgent need for sector-wide cost recovery.” COVID has had “a significant impact on the sector, which is why we are looking for short-term relief,” said Steve Orsini, the council’s president and CEO. “We want to work with the government over long-term sustainability, (which) would also be a goal,” he added. “Our focus now is getting COVID-19 relief to deal with the net impact on the sector so that we can continue to invest in students and communities and really help to support Ontario’s economic recovery.” He said universities have “been working hard to deal with the impact of COVID-19 and have done … [Read more...] about Ontario universities urge government to help with $1 billion COVID costs

Amazon set to open first checkout-free physical stores in the UK ‘this week’

AMAZON is set to open its first physical stores in the UK - and they won't have any checkouts. The online retailer will open the doors to its Amazon Go shops 'this week', after success in the US. The first shop will be located in Ealing in West London, the Mail on Sunday reports. There are no checkouts at Amazon Go stores, instead technology tracks the items you put in your basket. You're charged automatically when you leave via the Amazon Go app. The concept first launched in the US in 2018 and it was first reported last year that the shopping giant was eyeing as many as 30 locations in the UK for bricks and mortar stores . According to the newspaper report, staff are preparing to open the shop this week and there are coverings hiding the Amazon branded store front. The shops use "Just Walk Out" technology which means customers can avoid queueing. Shoppers must scan the supermarket's app on the gated turnstile when entering the stores. Cameras monitor … [Read more...] about Amazon set to open first checkout-free physical stores in the UK ‘this week’

Crude oil or cooking oil? For some US refiners, it’s now a choice

NEW YORK: Refiners have always produced fuel using crude oil. Now some are using grease. A slump in demand for gasoline since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic has several refining companies accelerating their plans to retrofit facilities to produce so-called renewable diesel made from, among other things, used cooking oil from fast-food restaurants. The shift helps, they say, because it allows them to tap into lucrative federal and state incentives for production of low carbon fuels at a time when slumping fuel demand has squeezed profit margins for conventional fuels like gasoline. Companies that have recently announced moves to produce renewable diesel include CVR Energy , Marathon Petroleum Corp , Phillips 66 and HollyFrontier Corp , according to a Reuters review of company earnings statements in the first half of 2020. The planned conversion of Phillips 66's refinery in Rodeo, California, for example, is "expected to deliver strong returns through the sale of high … [Read more...] about Crude oil or cooking oil? How to Set Up a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Network as an Alternative to Broadband

For many of us, especially in rural areas, broadband speeds over cable or DSL (or heaven forbid, satellite) aren't as reliable or as fast as we would like—if they're even available at all. But the increase in speed and capacity of 4G LTE ( and now 5G ) networks has opened up another option. Traditional hurdles that made this less than an ideal solution—data caps, expense, bandwidth, coverage, compatible hardware—are slowly becoming less of an issue as the technology improves, and it's now very possible to switch completely from standard broadband to 4G LTE broadband—with a few caveats and conditions. How 4G LTE Internet Works The idea behind 4G LTE at home is pretty simple at its core: Deliver internet access to your home in the same way that your phone gets online when it's away from Wi-Fi. If you've ever tried to connect your laptop to a hot spot running from your phone, then you know what's involved, together with all the potential pros (wireless internet access … [Read more...] about How to Set Up a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Network as an Alternative to Broadband

Commentary: How Zoom-working will change companies forever

HONG KONG: Like thousands of other professors, the executive education programmes I teach have either been cancelled or migrated over to Zoom, under the shadow of a pandemic. Just the other day, one of my class participants, John, presented a case study. “What a Zoombomber,” someone moaned in the chat window for the online class session. The chat window pops its head as more classmates chime in on what they think of the speaker’s opinion. “That’s just so John,” complains another. READ: Commentary: Remote working promised freedom, but seems to be delivering the exact opposite READ: Commentary: COVID-19 outbreak reveals poor etiquette in working from home But here’s where it gets interesting. In the chatbox exchange, John's classmates are not only expressing their opinions of how John is doing but also adjusting their feedback accordingly All of a sudden, observers are forced to confront the collective and more balanced opinion of others. “Well, I guess he has his … [Read more...] about Commentary: How Zoom-working will change companies forever
