Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. admits officers made some mistakes in a 2014 marijuana raid examined in federal court this month, with a jury in a civil case concluding that police stomped on a New Orleans man, knocking out his teeth, and illegally searched his bare body. Though the excessive force claims brought by Brett Percle, 24, may have attracted much of the attention in the four-day trial, it was the strip search of Percle and others in a house that could provoke change within the Baton Rouge Police Department, Dabadie said. For the chief, the trial illuminated a technical flaw in a warrant by a Baton Rouge officer, saying he didn’t use language broad enough to allow searches of suspects in the house. Dabadie said he is looking to implement fixes. But some experts questioned whether one of his potential remedies would simply give officers more cover to carry out what might be unconstitutional strip searches of suspects at scenes. Australia, China, Malaysia say underwater search for MH370 is suspended
SYDNEY - The deep-sea search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended on Tuesday without any trace being found of the plane that vanished in 2014 with 239 people on board, the three countries involved in the search said. The location of Flight MH370 has become one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries since the plane disappeared en route to Beijing from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. "Despite every effort using the best science available ... the search has not been able to locate the aircraft," Malaysian, Australian and Chinese authorities said in a statement. The last search vessel left the area on Tuesday, the three countries said, after scouring the 120,000-sq-km (75,000-sq-mile) area of the Indian Ocean sea floor that has been the focus of the almost-three-year search. [[nid:283465]] Malaysia, Australia and China agreed in July to suspend the search if the plane was not found or new evidence uncovered once that area had been checked. Searchers draw blank in southern search for MH370
SYDNEY - Australian and American planes drew a blank Wednesday on the first full day of a search across a vast tract of the southern Indian Ocean for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Authorities in Kuala Lumpur on Monday asked Canberra to take responsibility for the "southern vector" of the operation to locate the Boeing 777 that disappeared on March 8 en route to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board. The Malaysian government believes the jet was deliberately diverted and flew for several hours after leaving its scheduled flight path - either north towards Central Asia, or towards the southern Indian Ocean. While one sortie was flown late Tuesday, the search kicked into full gear with three long-range Australian, American and New Zealand surveillance planes involved on Wednesday, scouring an area of 305,000 square kilometres (122,000 sq miles) - bigger than either Italy or the Philippines. Five merchant ships also responded to a broadcast for shipping to help … [Read more...] about Searchers draw blank in southern search for MH370
US sends destroyer to search for missing AirAsia flight QZ8501
WASHINGTON, Dec 30, 2014 (AFP) - The United States deployed a destroyer to help look for a missing AirAsia jetliner, US officials said Monday, amid fears the aircraft crashed into the sea. The USS Sampson was expected to arrive Tuesday to the search zone for Flight QZ8501, which disappeared on Sunday over the Java Sea with 162 people on board. "The US Navy is working closely with the government of Indonesia to identify additional surface or airborne capabilities that best assist their search efforts," the Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement. The State Department earlier said that Indonesia had officially requested US help and confirmed that no Americans were on board the flight. "Our embassy in Jakarta is in close contact with Indonesian officials, and today, we received a request for assistance locating the airplane," said Jeffrey Rathke, a State Department spokesman. "We are reviewing that request to find out how best we can meet Indonesia's request for assistance." He … [Read more...] about US sends destroyer to search for missing AirAsia flight QZ8501
