By Jennifer Couzin-Frankel Apr. 13, 2021 , 12:50 PM Science ’s COVID-19 reporting is supported by the Heising-Simons Foundation. After the first surge of COVID-19 cases in spring 2020, a new worry emerged: Some people didn’t get better . For those with so-called Long COVID, lingering symptoms ranged from brain fog and intense fatigue to shortness of breath and loss of smell and taste. So far, there’s little clarity about what causes or how to treat this constellation of symptoms. Some surveys suggest between 10% and 30% of people infected with the pandemic coronavirus may struggle to recover, but these data are preliminary. Emilia Liana Falcone, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Montreal Hospital Center, and Michael Sneller, an infectious disease specialist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), are each leading a large Long COVID clinical trial. They are recruiting volunteers who’ve had COVID-19—some with ongoing … [Read more...] about How scientists are teasing apart the biology of Long COVID

Spark: How Genius Ignites, From Child Prodigies to Late Bloomers
Source: Author Claudia Kalb, used with permission We see the core of genius as great intellectual potential and admire it from afar. But genius means little unless it’s harnessed to work, to curiosity, and even to courage. First of all, what is your definition of genius? No one has discovered a single source of genius, and such a thing will almost certainly never be found. I see genius as the pinnacle of potential—the ability to harness intelligence , curiosity, perseverance, and luck to forge a new way to see and think and hear and understand. Genius requires a willingness to fail, a passion to pursue, and an idea or concept so transformative it changes a field forever. It’s important to note that the subject of genius does not define the individuals in Spark . Instead, I use it as a framework to explore the creative journeys of 13 remarkable people. Although they differ in numerous ways—the eras in which they were born, the privileges and traumas they endured, the … [Read more...] about Spark: How Genius Ignites, From Child Prodigies to Late Bloomers
Here Are The States That Want To Ban Trans Surgeries For Minors
A number of states have introduced legislation that would ban transgender surgeries and procedures for minors. What to know if you just got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
advertisement advertisement advertisement I got the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on Monday afternoon, the same day that my California county opened up vaccinations to people under the age of 50. Twelve hours later, I woke up to the news that the CDC and FDA had recommended an immediate pause in the use of the vaccine as they investigate a potential link to a rare type of dangerous blood clots. What now? advertisement advertisement If you just received the vaccine, the first thing to understand is that the risk of blood clots seems to be extraordinarily low. Out of more than 6.8 million people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the U.S. so far, only six later experienced cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, blood clots that form in the veins that drain from the brain. “This is literally a one in a million type of event,” says Gigi Gronvall, senior scholar at the Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins … [Read more...] about What to know if you just got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Joe Biden: U.S. Has Enough Coronavirus Vaccines Without Johnson & Johnson
President Joe Biden reassured Americans the United States had enough coronavirus vaccines, even without the Johnson & Johnson vaccine federal health officials paused Tuesday. “There is enough vaccine; that is basically 100 percent unquestionable, for every single, solitary, American,” Biden said. The president spoke to reporters briefly in the Oval Office Tuesday and said the United States already purchased 600 million doses of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. He indicated the country did not even need vaccines from Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca. Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday he could not say definitively whether the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would return to market. “I wouldn’t want to speculate as to what would happen often when you see things like this, that you pause and come back. Whether or not that happens now I can’t guarantee it,” he said. Fauci said the decision on the vaccine would take “days to weeks” to review. Federal health … [Read more...] about Joe Biden: U.S. Has Enough Coronavirus Vaccines Without Johnson & Johnson
