Along with all the expectations among freshers, you sense plenty of that implied pride and ambition. Liverpool’s main university campuses are just off Hope Street and, despite everything, that feels about right. Despite a challenging summer, Beer still confesses to excitement at going around her halls of residence, “trying to settle people in”. The next round of that welcome began at her university yesterday with an open day for 13,000 prospective students and their families. “For all the noise, people are still putting their faith in higher education,” she says. “And people still have positive and high motives for the commitment. We need to be kinder and more supportive as a nation of that, rather than constantly expressing the politics of envy and begrudging.” … [Read more...] about What next for England’s troubled universities?

Student recruitment has also dogged the development of UTCs. It is expected that applications will increase as these new institutions become better known, but none of the colleges are currently at full capacity. SPT0418–47 happens to have another galaxy in direct line of sight between it and Earth. The mass of that closer galaxy acts as a gravitational lens, bending SPT0418–47’s rays toward Earth so that ALMA can get a better image. That lensed image appears at first sight as a ring of fire (pictured). But the astronomers used computer modeling to reconstruct what SPT0418–47 really looks like. Reporting today in Nature, they reveal it has a rotating disk and a bulge around its center just like the Milky Way. Such features were thought to form much later in galactic evolution. … [Read more...] about Astronomers spy a Milky Way–like galaxy in very early universe
