Out of an abundance of caution, US officials on Tuesday recommended pausing use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine. Officials linked the vaccine to six peculiar illnesses in which people developed life-threatening blood clots in combination with low levels of blood platelets, the cell fragments in blood that form clots. One person died from their condition and another is in critical condition. It’s unclear if the vaccine caused the illnesses. Even if it did, the illnesses would represent an exceedingly rare side effect. The six cases occurred among more than 6.8 million people in the US who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. That would make it a side effect seen in fewer than one in a million . The risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19, which the vaccine protects against, easily exceeds those odds. Without question, the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the potential risks. Still, with robust supplies of vaccine from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNtech—neither … [Read more...] about The very common vaccine ingredient at the center of J&J, AstraZeneca drama

‘The Fowl Have A Feast’: Key West, Florida, Prepares Legislation Against Chickens
The city of Key West is taking legislative action to counter the exploding population of chickens living in and around the city, according to the Miami Herald. Chickens roaming the busy streets are a common sight in the city of Key West, however, the chicken population has become a nuisance, defecating all over the city and attacking pedestrians. The city has responded with a new ordinance banning citizens from feeding the birds , according to the Miami Herald . “The fowl have a feast,” City Commissioner Clayton Lopez said. “They can pick and choose better than we can what they eat off their plate.” The ordinance, which was unanimously accepted in a first reading Wednesday, reportedly cites health concerns and property damage as the reason for the bill. (RELATED: How Cocaine Chicken Became A Tradition In The Bobby Brown Family) “The casual French fry guy is not our problem,” Lopez reportedly continued. “There are people who buy 50-pound bags of feed and even … [Read more...] about ‘The Fowl Have A Feast’: Key West, Florida, Prepares Legislation Against Chickens
How to restart MacOS Finder
There are a few reasons why you might need to restart the Finder on a Mac - that’s the app where you can view your files and folders and move things around (and, um, find things). You may need to relaunch the Finder after you have made changes to your preferences or configurations. Maybe the Finder is exceptionally slow, not responding, keeps crashing randomly, or you are seeing a Finder Quit Unexpectedly message, and you are hoping that restarting it will fix the problem. Before we show you how to relaunch or quit the Finder, there are a couple of reasons why your Finder might be slow or not be working properly (perhaps you can’t drag or copy files, or it’s freezing when you use it). Things can start to slow down as you run low on storage - this is why it’s recommended that you should keep 20% of your storage space free - so it might be worth looking into this if you are experiencing a recurring problem with the Finder. The other thing that can slow down the Finder is Spotlight … [Read more...] about How to restart MacOS Finder
Elsa and Olaf? Characters from the movie ‘Frozen’ could serve as hurricane names this season
(CNN) We are three months from the start of hurricane season -- though the official start date may come earlier this year because hurricanes have occurred outside the traditional season in recent years. And, yes, those famous Disney characters from "Frozen" could really serve as inspiration for hurricane names this year. Three of them -- Ana, Elsa, Olaf -- are on the list of official names in the Atlantic and east Pacific basins, in what could be another active hurricane season. Though it's too early to know definitively, forecasters say a few key elements could determine whether we see another active season similar to last year. The official start of the hurricane season is June 1st, just 100 days away. It only takes one storm to make it a bad year for you, and that's the one to prepare for going into the season. @NWS @NOAA @NOAAComms @NHC_Atlantic @NHC_Pacific https://t.co/3TBiIEfPWT pic.twitter.com/Ud4SMCZ6sK — National … [Read more...] about Elsa and Olaf? Your most distant cousin doesn’t even have an anus
The entire history of the animal kingdom is like a long highway, with different species exiting at different points to pursue their own evolutionary paths. And sea sponges got off at the highway's first exit, ending up in the most distant corner of the country. Scientists recently compared the genetics of sponges with that of another unusual animal: comb jellies. They say their research, published March 19 in the journal Nature Communications , resolves a debate: Some biologists already considered sponges the most distant cousins of all other animals; others argued that comb jellies were the true "sister to all other animals." The concept of evolution existed for about a century before anyone discovered DNA. Many of the ideas developed during that era still hold: Animals that share many traits likely diverged from common ancestors more recently — taking the same evolutionary route until that point. And two animals that share fewer traits likely diverged longer ago. Humans … [Read more...] about Your most distant cousin doesn’t even have an anus
