BARCELONA: Talking points from the weekend in La Liga. HAVE REAL MADRID LOST THEIR FIGHT? Real Madrid pointed the finger at organisers La Liga after their 0-0 draw at Osasuna, with coach Zinedine Zidane and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saying the match should have been called off due to a snowstorm, which also disrupted their journey to and from Pamplona. The disappointing result followed a 1-1 draw at struggling Elche in Real's previous away match and the question about whether this side lacks the mentality needed to win the less glamorous matches reared its head again. "The players are losing their enthusiasm to play for Madrid," said newspaper AS, unimpressed with the club's complaints about the weather. "It's time to leave the spa and get in the freezing mud and win." IF BARCA KEEP PLAYING LIKE THIS, MAYBE MESSI WILL STAY Lionel Messi has always said the most important factor in determining his future is whether or not Barcelona have a winning team, and if … [Read more...] about La Liga talking points

Football: Atletico tighten grip on La Liga lead with win over Sevilla
MADRID: La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid proved their title credentials yet again by beating in-form Sevilla 2-0 at home on Tuesday (Jan 12) to stride four points clear at the top of the standings. Atletico got off to an ideal start when Angel Correa received a pass from returning right back Kieran Trippier and took Sevilla by surprise with a shot which bounced in off the near post to give them the lead in the 17th minute. Midfielder Saul Niguez effectively clinched the victory with a thumping effort from the edge of the area in the 76th to score his first goal of the season and condemn Sevilla to a first defeat in 10 games in all competitions. The victory took Atletico on to 41 points after 16 games, four clear of second-placed Real Madrid who have played 18. Atletico had enjoyed a rest over the weekend as their match with Athletic Bilbao had been postponed due to a snowstorm in the Spanish capital, although the freezing conditions had also disrupted their training schedule. … [Read more...] about Football: Atletico tighten grip on La Liga lead with win over Sevilla
Football: Late Cadiz penalty disrupts Barca winning streak in La Liga
BARCELONA: Lionel Messi marked his record 506th appearance for Barcelona in La Liga by scoring a penalty, but the Catalans could only draw 1-1 with Cadiz on Sunday (Feb 21) after conceding a spot kick late on. The Argentine overtook former team mate Xavi Hernandez in the all-time list of Barca appearances in the league, and opened the scoring in the 32nd minute by calmly passing the ball into the bottom corner from the spot after Pedri had been tripped by Cadiz's Iza. Fielding the same starting 11 that had been thrashed 4-1 at home to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday, a rusty looking Barca failed to build on their lead and paid the price when Clement Lenglet gave away a penalty for striking Cadiz forward Ruben Sobrino as he tried to clear the ball. Cadiz's Alex Fernandez made no mistake from the spot in the 89th minute to disrupt Barca's run of seven straight league wins as the Catalans failed to take advantage of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid's surprise … [Read more...] about Football: Late Cadiz penalty disrupts Barca winning streak in La Liga
Soccer-Injuries and COVID-19 take toll in La Liga title race
MADRID: Injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic are starting to take their toll in the Liga title race, with all three teams involved: leaders Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona - missing a number of key players this weekend. A depleted Real could be without nine first team regulars as they look to keep their slim hopes of retaining the title alive when they host Valencia on Sunday. Full-back Marcelo is the latest to join a lengthening injury list, which includes captain Sergio Ramos and Eden Hazard, after picking up a calf problem in midweek. Second-placed Real sit five points behind Atletico having played two games more. Atletico will have a chance to maintain their advantage at the top when they travel to Granada on Saturday. Diego Simeone's side have been hit hard by several positive COVID-19 cases, with Thomas Lemar, Hector Herrera, Joao Felix, Moussa Dembele and Mario Hermoso all isolating. The Argentine continues to remain philosophical when speaking of … [Read more...] about Soccer-Injuries and COVID-19 take toll in La Liga title race
Soccer-En-Nesyri treble helps Sevilla beat Sociedad in goal fest
REUTERS: Sevilla forward Youssef En-Nesyri scored a hat-trick as they beat visitors Real Sociedad 3-2 in a La Liga thriller after a chaotic start saw four goals in 10 minutes on Saturday. Moroccan En-Nesyri nudged a low cross from Fernando into the net after four minutes but less than 60 seconds later Real levelled thanks to a remarkable own goal from Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, who lobbed goalkeeper Bono from outside the area as he tried to prevent Alexander Isak reaching the ball. En-Nesyri restored Sevilla's lead moments later with an impressive solo run and powerful finish but Swedish forward Isak levelled in the 14th, sticking a leg out to score from a corner. En-Nesyri completed his treble in the first minute of the second half, pouncing at the far post after Lucas Ocampos had carved his way through the visiting defence.
