REUTERS: Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is going through a rough patch in front of goal but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday he was confident the Frenchman will rediscover his form on the back of his unquestionable work ethic. Martial was United's top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions last season but has found the net just seven times so far this term. The 25-year-old once again failed to take his chances in the goalless draw with Real Sociedad in the Europa League second leg match on Thursday but Solskjaer is pleased with Martial's recent progress in training. "Anthony knows what we want and he is working really hard to do well for the team and that's what's pleasing me every day in training," Solskjaer told a news conference ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Chelsea. "He's not going to sit down and wait for things to happen, he knows he will have to make it happen himself and we encourage him and coach him and we know that he's got this … [Read more...] about Football: Solskjaer backs goal-shy Martial to fire again for Man United

Low-scoring Burnley upset Palace with 3-0 away win
LONDON: Burnley pulled further clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday moving them up to 15th place in the table. Sean Dyche's side headed to Selhurst Park as the lowest scorers in the league and with just five goals on the road, but struck twice within the opening 10 minutes. Johann Berg Gudmundsson fired the Clarets in front after the Palace defence failed to deal with an Erik Pieters cross and the Icelandic winger created space for himself before drilling a left-foot shot into the far corner. Burnley doubled their advantage from a Dwight McNeil corner into a packed box, with Palace keeper Vicente Guaita crowded out and unable to come out and claim the ball, allowing Jay Rodriguez to head home his first Premier League goal of the season. Matt Lowton's first ever Burnley goal at this level made it 3-0 after the break, the fullback powering forward from the halfway line, finding Rodriguez inside and then volleying home the … [Read more...] about Low-scoring Burnley upset Palace with 3-0 away win
Football: Tuchel’s Chelsea reign starts with dull Wolves stalemate
LONDON: Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was left with much to ponder as his first match in charge ended in a dreary 0-0 home draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Wednesday. A day after replacing the club's record scorer Frank Lampard in the Stamford Bridge hot seat, Tuchel watched his side dominate possession but offer little goal threat until the later stages. Chelsea strung together almost 900 passes against a defensive Wolves but the vast majority of them were risk-free and easy meat for the visitors' well-drilled rearguard. An entirely forgettable first half at a sodden Stamford Bridge was followed by a livelier second period with Chelsea close to giving Tuchel a winning start on a few occasions. Ben Chilwell blasted a great chance over the bar and Callum Hudson-Odoi, a surprise starter, had a deflected shot saved. It was actually Wolves who went closest in a rare attack when Pedro Neto scooped a lob onto the roof of the net. Chelsea's poor run … [Read more...] about Football: Tuchel’s Chelsea reign starts with dull Wolves stalemate
Football: Liverpool home run ended by shock Burnley defeat
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool's 68-game unbeaten run in the Premier League at Anfield came to a stunning end on Thursday (Jan 21) as Ashley Barnes' late penalty earned Burnley a 1-0 win. The loss was Liverpool's first Premier League defeat at home since they were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace on Apr 23, 2017. Burnley began the game just one place above the relegation zone, but gave their chances of beating the drop a huge boost when Barnes was tripped by Alisson Becker seven minutes from time and then beat the Brazilian from the spot. It decided the contest after Jurgen Klopp's side failed to score for the fourth straight league match. Despite a host of defensive injuries, it has been a lack of goals that has cost Liverpool of late, and Klopp reacted to Liverpool's longest Premier League goal drought for 16 years by dropping top-scorer Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino to the bench. But Divock Origi failed to take his chance with a rare start as the Belgian wasted his side's best … [Read more...] about Football: Liverpool home run ended by shock Burnley defeat
Maddison says Leicester OK with COVID-compliant celebrations
REUTERS: Leicester City midfielder James Maddison said players are willing to follow new guidelines on goal celebrations if it means games can continue, after gesturing handshakes and high-fives in Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton. The sight of players huddling after goals has drawn criticism in Britain, with the rest of the population asked to follow strict COVID-19 distancing rules during the pandemic. Premier League chief Richard Masters had asked players to set the right example by not celebrating goals with the usual hugs. Maddison and fellow goal-scorer Harvey Barnes adhered to the rules on Saturday. Elsewhere, West Ham United's Michail Antonio adopted a routine that looked like he was swimming backstroke across the London Stadium turf in their 1-0 win over Burnley. "If things like that are what we need to keep football going, then so be it. We've been told to stop gatherings of people and I tried to make it light-hearted," Maddison told BT Sport. … [Read more...] about Maddison says Leicester OK with COVID-compliant celebrations
