Ronaldo eyes first Serie A top scorer prize after latest goal landmark

REUTERS: Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at least 20 goals in the last 12 seasons in a top five European league on Tuesday to continue his charge towards sealing one of the few individual awards left for him to win: Serie A top scorer. The Portuguese forward guided a composed finish past Spezia goalkeeper Ivan Provedel in a 3-0 Serie A win for the Italian champions to mark the 600th league appearance of his career in typical fashion. He has now hit the 20-goal mark in every season since his debut campaign at Real Madrid in 2009-10, with his highest tally coming in 2014-15 when he scored 48 goals in 35 La Liga games for the Spanish club. The 36-year-old is currently two goals clear of Inter Milan's Romelu Lukaku at the summit of the Serie A scoring charts as he targets his first 'capocannoniere' crown in Italy. Ronaldo scored 21 goals in his debut season in Turin in 2018-19 to finish fourth in the league scoring charts, five behind top scorer Fabio … [Read more...] about Ronaldo eyes first Serie A top scorer prize after latest goal landmark

Football: Chelsea clinch 2-1 win over Barcelona in Japan friendly

SAITAMA, Japan: Goals from Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley saw Chelsea grab a 2-1 victory against Barcelona on Tuesday (Jul 23) in an exhibition match in Japan. World Cup-winning French striker Antoine Griezmann and former Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong made their unofficial debut for the Spanish giants, pleasing some 51,126 fans who cheered every move during the star-studded game. Chelsea striker Abraham opened the scoring in the 34th minute by pouncing on a mistake by Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets who attempted to clear the ball. But with Chelsea midfielder Jorginho applying pressure, the ball rolled towards Abraham who only had to step past rushing goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and gently send it into the net. Chelsea coach Frank Lampard was all praise for his young striker. "Tammy, he is a goal scorer. He is hungry for goals," he said. Despite facing a transfer ban, Lampard said Chelsea's two-game tour in Japan showed he had a "competitive" and … [Read more...] about Football: Chelsea clinch 2-1 win over Barcelona in Japan friendly

La Liga’s Alternative Awards: Recognising Spain’s best of the rest

SEVILLE: This has been such an epic season, brimming over with drama, quality, tears, surprises, incompetence, confusion, sackings, fight backs and heroism that I've decided two trophies (La Liga and the Copa del Rey) simply aren't enough. So here are a few medals and awards that acknowledge that the tapestry of a Spanish season is not woven by excellence alone, that the supporting cast, sometimes, keep us on the edge of our seat, laughing, despairing, roaring (with joy or anger) almost as often as the elite do. This is their moment. THE "MY HEIGHT MIGHT BE 5-FOOT-5 BUT INSIDE I'M 6-FOOT-5" AWARD This one was very nearly a tie. Two diminutive guys, bursting with so much talent and character that you'd imagine they've been given theirs and someone else's as well: Santi Cazorla and Iago Aspas. Juventus complete permanent €18.5m signing of Weston McKennie

The United States international signed on a season-long loan for a fee of €4.5m last August. The 22-year-old has impressed in his first few months with the Serie A champions, scoring five goals in 31 appearances in all competitions, including in the 3-0 Champions League win away to Barcelona. His five goals in Serie A have already made him the leading American scorer in the history of Italy's top flight. On Wednesday, Juve announced McKennie had signed a four-year contract. The €18.5m will be paid to Schalke over three years and could rise by a further €6.5m in variables. "Weston McKennie's adventure with the Juventus shirt started very well and, as they say, the numbers don't lie," Juve said in announcing the deal. "Wes has proven to be a very important resource for coach [Andrea] Pirlo, having already put his signature on important performances and goals. It's impossible not to think about his goal against Barcelona at Camp Nou, or the one in the Derby della Mole – his … [Read more...] about Juventus complete permanent €18.5m signing of Weston McKennie

Football: England into Women’s World Cup semi-finals after seeing off Norway

LE HAVRE, France: England's women have their sights set on ending their semi-final curse after a stunning strike by Lucy Bronze helped Phil Neville's team to a 3-0 win over Norway in Le Havre on Thursday (Jun 27) and took them into the last four of the World Cup. David Beckham, a former colleague of Neville's for Manchester United and England, was among the crowd of more than 21,000 at the Stade Oceane to see midfield stalwart Jill Scott open the scoring inside three minutes, becoming just the second English player to score at three separate women's World Cups. Ellen White then grabbed her fifth goal of the tournament five minutes prior to half-time and Bronze made sure of the victory with a rising shot high into the net as the hour mark approached. England were so comfortable towards the end that they could even afford to squander a penalty, with Nikita Parris having her late spot-kick saved. There were striking similarities between Bronze's effort here and her goal that … [Read more...] about Football: England into Women’s World Cup semi-finals after seeing off Norway
