Football: Depleted Bayern cruise past Lokomotiv 2-0

MUNICH:  Bayern Munich earned a 2-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow in their final Champions League Group A game on Wednesday (Dec 9) with second-half goals from Niklas Suele and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Bavarians, last season's winners who qualified for the last 16 with two matches to spare, fielded a largely second-string team with the pressure on Lokomotiv, desperate for a win to secure third place in the standings and a Europa League spot. Bayern had the upper hand but carved out only few scoring chances in the first half, with top scorer Robert Lewandowski sidelined due to a minor injury. Thomas Mueller fired wide from close range in the 39th minute before making way for Serge Gnabry after the break, a substitution that provided an instant boost. The Bavarians came close with a Suele header and Choupo-Moting's backheel flick in the 53rd, before a double chance from Gnabry, who was denied by keeper Guilherme and volleyed the rebound narrowly wide. Guilherme was … [Read more...] about Football: Depleted Bayern cruise past Lokomotiv 2-0

Now not the time to think about records, says Spurs’ Kane

REUTERS: Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored his 200th goal for the club in Thursday's 3-1 Europa League win at Bulgaria's Ludogorets but he says records are not his focus right now. Kane is only the third Spurs player to reach the milestone and the 27-year-old is eight goals behind Bobby Smith and could threaten Jimmy Greaves's record of 266. "These are great things but hard to take in while you're playing," Kane told the club's website. "Once you finish your career you take it all in." Kane's first goal for the club was also in Europe's second-tier club competition, a neat finish late in the game against Shamrock Rovers in 2011. "Time goes so quickly and it feels like yesterday that I scored that first goal," he added. "It's a great achievement to reach 200 and hopefully there's a few more left. Let's keep them coming." Spurs manager Jose Mourinho said Kane could go on and replace Greaves as Spurs record scorer. "What he's achieving in the Premier League and … [Read more...] about Now not the time to think about records, says Spurs’ Kane

Spurs fixture crunch not an excuse for Mourinho ahead of United test

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho says he has already moaned enough about the club's packed fixture list and will not use it as an excuse ahead of their Premier League clash at Manchester United on Sunday. Spurs thrashed Maccabi Haifa 7-2 on Thursday in a Europa League playoff game to reach the group stage as they coped with a third home game in five days including Sunday's Newcastle United draw and Tuesday's League Cup shootout win over Chelsea. Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Steven Bergwijn have all started twice in 48 hours this week, while Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a much-changed lineup for Wednesday's League Cup victory at Brighton & Hove Albion. Yet Mourinho is only focused on preparing Tottenham to make one last push against his former club this weekend. "It's the last one, the last match," he told a news conference on Friday. "I don't want to moan. I moaned enough and I moaned with real things on my hands and I don't … [Read more...] about Spurs fixture crunch not an excuse for Mourinho ahead of United test
