UT President Calls Emails Defending Eyes of Texas ‘Extremist’

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Racist emails sent to the University of Texas amid a debate over the school song “The Eyes of Texas” were “abhorrent and hateful” but don’t truly represent the Longhorns’ alumni and fans, university President Jay Hartzell said Tuesday. Hartzell was responding to a report published Monday by the Texas Tribune that featured emails sent by school supporters angry that a group of football players had refused to sing the traditional song after games because of its historical links to racist minstrel shows. The Texas Tribune reported that the vast majority of more than 300 emails it received in a public records request demanded the school keep the song, and dozens warned that donors would withhold money if players didn’t get in line. Several said Black players should leave the school if they don’t want to sing. Since Monday, at least two former players have tweeted they received threats from Texas fans for protesting the song. “People who target our … [Read more...] about UT President Calls Emails Defending Eyes of Texas ‘Extremist’

Northern Ireland loyalists pull support for Good Friday peace deal

Loyalist paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland were on Thursday reported to have told London they are temporarily withdrawing support for the 1998 peace agreement, often called the Good Friday Agreement. The decision was taken amid concerns over the UK's Brexit deal with the European Union, Northern Irish newspaper the Belfast Telegraph reported . A letter from an umbrella body representing loyalist groups said its opposition was because of the Northern Irish Protocol — part of the Brexit divorce deal. They oppose the additional checks and paperwork for goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland — implemented to prevent the need for a hard border on the island of Ireland. What did the letter say? The communication — sent to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson — said the opposition should remain "peaceful and democratic." However, it will raise fears about the future of the loyalist ceasefire. The letter, from the Loyalist Communities Council, claimed … [Read more...] about Northern Ireland loyalists pull support for Good Friday peace deal

Why the Web Hasn’t Birthed a Prettier Craigslist

You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave! If I told you these Eagles lyrics described a certain website, you'd probably think it was Facebook . After all, public exclamations of quitting Facebook are so common it's cliche, but by and large the people still stay. The same is true on other networks that angered users with product or business changes. But even when a better alternative arrives — such as Path to Facebook or App.net to Twitter, we still don't see the users walk away. The two times a major exodus did come to fruition — Myspace to Facebook and Digg to Reddit — it was largely based on weaknesses in ease of use rather than philosophy. The weaknesses in Craigslist are painfully obvious: The site is ugly, any listing you post almost guarantees spam to your inbox, the apartment listings are full of scams, the site was once a known destination for sex trafficking (albeit minimized now) and lastly, people have died from engaging in a Craigslist … [Read more...] about Why the Web Hasn’t Birthed a Prettier Craigslist

Craigslist’s Child Sex: Who’s To Blame? [smcb]

Prostitution on the Internet is hardly a new phenomenon, and shocking as it might be, child prostitution isn't particularly a new problem in general, either. We've been doing the social media crime blotter series for a while now and I really haven't touched on the prostitution angle in a big way up until this point because when you look at crime related stories in connection with social media, that is the noise you filter around. So it isn't particularly unexpected that CNN recently ran a fairly high profile "special investigation" into Craigslist and it's role in the online sex trade. Generally, it's very difficult to get brand new Craigslist CEO to comment on their erotic services section and the role it plays in the illegal business of paying for sex (underage or not), but he weighed in for the piece with a few choice words this time around : Craigslist executives said they abhor the fact that their site is being used for child prostitution but believe that the problem … [Read more...] about Craigslist’s Child Sex: Who’s To Blame?
