Expect spring to be even drier out west, says NOAA

(CNN) Saturday marks the first day of astronomical spring and the outlook is grim for the western portion of the country, where drought conditions will persist. "Drier conditions in the Southwest US associated with La Niña and the failed 2020 summer monsoon have been contributing factors to the development and intensification of what represents the most significant US spring drought since 2013," said NOAA. Dry weather is expected to linger into the spring, with below average precipitation forecast across much of the West. This will likely make the drought situation even worse. One of the contributing factors to the western drought has been lack of snowfall. The greatest area of snow drought expansion has been in the Sierra Nevada where no large storms have occurred since the strong atmospheric river in late January. This has left almost all of the Sierra Nevada weather stations below the 30th percentile of snow water equivalent, and a few locations in the … [Read more...] about Expect spring to be even drier out west, says NOAA

Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur to appear in court in person on Oct. 22

Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur has been remanded in custody until Oct. 22 after appearing briefly in court Friday via video. McArthur is charged with eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of men with ties to Toronto’s Gay Village. “Negotiations and discussions are ongoing,” Crown attorney Mike Cantlon said in court as McArthur’s lawyer, James Miglin, stood nearby. McArthur, who was clean shaven, will appear in court in person later this month, Cantlon said. The 66-year-old landscaper was arrested Jan. 18 , after a sprawling, years-long investigation into the disappearances of men with connections to the city’s Church and Wellesley community from 2010 until 2017. It was the June 2017 disappearance of Andrew Kinsman, 49, that ultimately led police to McArthur. Identifying him as a suspect in Kinsman’s death prompting a sprawling investigation that included months of physical surveillance, the tracking of his vehicle and a surreptitious entry into his … [Read more...] about Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur to appear in court in person on Oct. 22

Man admits stalking young woman from JC to university, hired private eyes to film her

SINGAPORE: Over a year and four months, a man stalked a young woman he had seen in school, through junior college and university, creating 17 Instagram accounts to harass her, emailing her father and hiring private investigators to film her. Toh Wen Jie, 20, pleaded guilty midway through a trial on Wednesday (Apr 14) to one count of stalking the victim between October 2018 and February 2020. He sent her sexually explicit messages, calling her his fiancee, girlfriend and wife. According to court documents, he used "burner phones" and accounts when she blocked or ignored him. Toh waited for her outside her university for three to four hours a time over about a week, and wrote on his own question-and-answer Tellonym account that he had "a lot of time to kill" and that "I will literally strangle you if (it's) not against the law". The court heard that Toh first began eyeing the victim in 2016 when she was taking part in an event that is unnamed to protect her identity. She is now … [Read more...] about Man admits stalking young woman from JC to university, hired private eyes to film her

‘World-leading’ salmon farming standards needed for forestry in Marlborough Sounds

OPINION: “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise” wrote the American forester and ecologist Aldo Leopold in 1949. Leopold saw the land and people as part of the same community, a concept familiar to tangata whenua too. He could also have been writing about the Pelorus/Te Hoiere River and Marlborough Sounds, when he asked, what do we love: ‘Certainly not the soil, which we are sending helter-skelter downriver”. It is 46 years since the first complaint about soil erosion and excessive sedimentation from forest harvesting on the Marlborough Sounds environment, and yet harvesting remains poorly regulated. In a paper recently published in the NZ Journal of Forestry , I reviewed the history of forestry regulation in the Sounds and identified opportunities for doing things better. More on that later. When I worked for the Marlborough District Council, the industry was … [Read more...] about ‘World-leading’ salmon farming standards needed for forestry in Marlborough Sounds
