A grieving father who was desperate to bring his son’s killer to justice went on to help uncover the biggest drug epidemic in American history. Dan Schneider from New Orleans, explains how his search for justice for his son Danny Jr, 22, led him to uncover the early days of America’s opioid crisis in Netflix’s new hit true crime documentary, The Pharmacist. Danny Jr was shot dead in the street in April 1999 in a crack deal gone wrong, days after telling his father he wanted to arrange a protest to discourage young people from taking drugs. When the police failed to investigate the murder, dismissing Danny as just another ‘lowlife’ addict, his father launched his own fight to find the killer, offering a reward and approaching drug dealers for information. But his mission would uncover a wider scandal, because around the same time he noticed a large number of young people Danny’s age coming into his pharmacy for with high opioids prescriptions.
