Do viral boycotts lead to real results?

The people who work out at Equinox gyms might pay at least $240 a month for a membership, and the people who jump on bikes at SoulCycle might pay $35 a class. But they don’t all donate to Donald Trump. So, when the internet found out that Stephen Ross, the little-known-but-very-rich majority owner of both popular fitness brands had thrown a $100,000-per-ticket fundraiser for the president, they called for a boycott. All over Twitter and Facebook, acolytes of Equinox and SoulCycle vowed to cancel their memberships and leave their athleisure at home. (Or at least find another place to wear it.) It all felt a little … familiar. After all, right before that, there was the call to unsubscribe from the New York Times (the result of a poor headline) and the boycott of home-goods retailer Wayfair (the company sold mattresses and beds to border detention camps).
