Penn State holds candlelight vigil in honor of sex abuse victims, tries to start the healing on campus

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The bells above Old Main, the administrative centerpiece of Penn State’s University Park campus, rang nine times at 9 p.m. Friday. Students and staff, wrapped in navy blue sweaters and wearing white hats, streamed across the expansive lawn, lighting their paths with makeshift candle-holders in plastic cups. A single voice then began the vigil. “Can people hear me in the back?” said the woman, her words projected through a megaphone. A single male responded. “We are!” he said. “Penn State!” Others joined, reciting a chorus that echoed off the building’s limestone face five times. The woman, satisfied, expressed gratitude. “Thank you,” she said. Serenity supplanted the unrest that swallowed the campus Wednesday night. Even as glass shards, smashed from car windows during a mid-week riot, remained scattered on the asphalt of College Ave., current undergraduates and alumni sought solace in rallying to support victims of sexual abuse. Their concern contrasted with the ugly reality of a widening scandal involving former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.
