Long-standing ties to Canada grow stronger (30-06-2007) Canada will celebrate its Dominion Day tomorrow. Viet Nam News spoke with the country’s ambassador to Viet Nam, Gabriel Lessard. What is your view on the current state of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Canada? Relations between Canada and Viet Nam are long-standing, and growing ever stronger. In effect, our relations date back to 1954 when Canada was one of three official observers of the International Commission of Supervision and Control for the implementation of the Geneva Accord. More recently, the visit of Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper to Ha Noi during APEC, the visit of Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong to Canada in May 2007, and the recent visit of Canada’s Parliamentary Committee on International Trade to Ha Noi and HCM City all underline the high level of engagement between our two countries. Our trade and investment relations are growing rapidly, we co-operate on several international initiatives (including notably in ASEAN where Viet Nam co-ordinates Canada’s participation as a dialogue partner with this vital organisation), and Canada is a major development partner of Viet Nam.
